Ten minutes with Lauren
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute much of my success to the mentors who invested in my growth throughout my career. One of the most influential was Jack Howard, a retired attorney who began mentoring me in 2013 and taught me the foundations of family law, criminal defense, and personal injury practice. During a particularly challenging period of my life, when I was considering leaving the profession, his encouragement gave me the confidence to persevere and continue pursuing my legal career. Another important mentor has been Mark Devine, my current employer, who guided my development in immigration law and provided me with the opportunity to mentor younger attorneys, allowing me to pay forward the support I received. My education at the College of Charleston and the University of South Carolina School of Law provided a strong foundation, but it was the guidance, encouragement, and example of these mentors that truly shaped my professional journey. I have also been fortunate to stay engaged with the legal community through my involvement with the Charleston Bar Association and through pro bono work with Stillworthy Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals in recovery, experiences that have reinforced my commitment to service and advocacy.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are integrity, resilience, service, and personal growth. I take great pride in pursuing excellence in my profession, and one of the most meaningful milestones in my career was arguing a case before the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond. At the same time, my personal journey of recovery from alcoholism and addiction has shaped who I am and reinforced the importance of accountability, humility, and perseverance. Recovery programs have had a transformative impact on my life, inspiring me to give back through volunteer work with the South Carolina Bar’s Lawyers Helping Lawyers program, where I support attorneys facing substance use or mental health challenges. These experiences have strengthened my belief that success is not defined solely by professional accomplishments, but also by the ability to serve others, overcome adversity, and make a positive difference in the lives of those around us.
