Her Interview
Ten minutes with Lauretta
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my willingness to speak up, take on new responsibilities, and pursue opportunities that provide growth and experience. This mindset has helped me build my career and become a Chief Operating Officer, a role I have held for the past 15 years, including my recent position at Roxbury Community College.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to always remain open to learning and taking on additional responsibilities. Growth opportunities may not always come with immediate financial rewards, but the experience and skills gained will create opportunities that lead to long-term success.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would advise young women entering the industry to be willing to start at the beginning and build a strong foundation. Gaining experience through entry-level roles, such as an HR assistant, HR administrator, or HR generalist position, is valuable. Pursuing HR certifications can also help strengthen your knowledge and create more opportunities for career growth.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges in the field today include addressing compensation equity, employee retention, and maintaining compliance, particularly with immigration regulations. At the same time, there are many opportunities because organizations continue to need skilled HR professionals to manage people, compliance, and retention strategies. While AI is transforming areas like recruitment, it also creates opportunities for HR leaders to focus on more strategic and human-centered responsibilities.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are respect, integrity, fairness, consistency, and staying spiritually grounded. I believe in treating people the way I want to be treated, leading with honesty, and creating an environment where others feel valued and respected.
