About Laurie

Laurie Grant has worked in music for over 30 years as a songwriter, educator, musical director, and program director. She is the musical director for the nonprofit organization Starts Up LA, where she leads Rex and Friends, a group of talented adult musicians on the autism spectrum or who are blind or have other disabilities. The ensemble performs popular music, jazz, rock, and vocal harmonies, including original adaptations such as a reimagining of Alice in Wonderland. Grant studied at UCLA and Dick Grove Music Academy, which focused on jazz. Earlier in her career she co-founded and served as CEO of an entertainment production company that placed music in various media. She also works as an educator and mentor to emerging artists.

Ten minutes with Laurie

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be yourself. Don't be afraid to be yourself. Let it come from inside you. The best artists are the most authentic and the world can see that.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is how to make a living because you can't get paid from selling records the way we used to. Playing live and honing those skills early is important because people are still coming to see shows and paying money for live performances.
