Her Story
About Laurie
I have been in the legal field since 1986, and I am a senior litigation paralegal specializing in medical malpractice for the past 20 years. I handle files from open to closed trial and through the appeal process. What I believe makes me truly influential is my volunteer work in the legal field - I am the president of the State Annual Convention and the president of the Paralegal Association of New Jersey, and I am a former chair of the State Bar Paralegal Association. I try to support paralegals throughout the state, as well as rising paralegals and students. I have been co-hosting a podcast called Paralegal See Time for about two years, now in its fourth season, where we continuously educate paralegals on different areas of law. My journey into law was actually by accident - I initially wanted to be an architect, but because of circumstances, I was placed in a law office to work because I had too many credits at school. It just clicked with me and stayed with me. I loved that investigative nature, and it just felt like second nature. I obtained an associate degree in business administration and then went to an ABA-approved college for a paralegal certificate, combined with a lot of continuing legal education training. I am also a certified yoga teacher, having passed my certification in 2020, and I am working on a new project to bridge our professional field with some form of yoga to help with the stress of our demanding job. I coach for Girls on the Run, now in my fourth year, and I do pro bono work. I am a breast cancer survivor, and I have to say, have faith in God, then yourself.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Laurie
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say my diligence and networking, because I think that the people I've met along the way have either opened the door or was, you know, some way supportive in pushing me further and further.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Be true to yourself, and never lie.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be patient with yourself. Give yourself grace. And don't give up. Just believe in yourself. Have faith in God, then yourself.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I want to say the biggest challenge is probably keeping up with the changes, because now we have a lot of changes with AI, we have constantly changing laws and things with the Supreme Court constantly changing, so just really being able to keep up with that is a challenge. It's not undoable, but it is challenging. We're bound by the same rules as attorneys, and so keeping up with the constant changes, I think right now, is a challenge for us.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Authenticity. Being authentic is most important to me.
