What Spiritual Maturity Can Teach Us About Resilience, Intuition, Boundaries, and Becoming More Fully Human

You do not have to consider yourself spiritual to recognize that people change as they gain experience. Ideas that once helped us make sense of life may eventually feel too simple. This does not necessarily mean those ideas were wrong; often, they were simply incomplete.

We understand life through the lens we have at the time, shaped by our upbringing, emotions, experiences, expectations, and fears. As that lens changes, our understanding can change with it.

Like students who learn algebra after mastering addition, we do not have to discard everything we learned earlier. We simply make room for a larger and more nuanced view.

That willingness to reconsider what we think we know is one way to define maturity. In spiritual communities, it may be called spiritual growth. In other settings, it might be described as emotional intelligence, self-awareness, resilience, or character development.

Whatever language we use, the central question is the same:

Are our beliefs helping us engage with life more honestly, compassionately, and responsibly?

Here are seven common ideas about spirituality that, when examined more closely, offer useful lessons for almost anyone.

Myth 1: The More Spiritual You Become, the Happier You Will Be

Many people quietly assume that enough meditation, prayer, healing work, therapy, or positive thinking will eventually make life peaceful and predictable.

Yet no practice can protect us from grief, illness, disappointment, conflict, or change.

The most grounded people are not necessarily the people who have suffered the least. They are often those who have learned how to experience difficulty without completely losing themselves.

Their beliefs and practices do not eliminate pain. Instead, they provide perspective, support, and a way to move through it.

This distinction matters beyond spirituality.

A meaningful life is not the same as a constantly happy life.

Happiness is an emotion, and emotions naturally change. A deeper sense of well-being comes from knowing that we can face what is real, ask for help when we need it, and remain connected to meaning and hope even when circumstances are difficult.

Growth does not promise permanent happiness. It gives us a steadier place from which to meet both happiness and sorrow.

Myth 2: Intuition Means Always Being Right

Intuition is often treated as something mysterious, but it can also be understood in practical terms.

Our brains continually notice patterns, facial expressions, tone, inconsistencies, and subtle changes—sometimes before our conscious minds can explain what we have detected. This may appear as a gut feeling, a sudden insight, or a quiet sense that something deserves attention.

As a professional intuitive and medium, I value this form of perception.

It also requires humility.

Intuition is not infallibility.

What we sense can be influenced by hope, fear, experience, personal bias, or incomplete information. A feeling may contain something useful without providing the whole story.

This is why discernment matters.

Rather than saying, “I know this is absolutely true,” a responsible person can say, “This is what I am sensing; now I need to consider it carefully.”

When the stakes are significant—especially in medical, financial, legal, or safety decisions—intuition should not replace facts, qualified advice, or evidence.

It can be one source of information among several.

Humility does not weaken intuition. It makes intuition safer and more useful.

Myth 3: Positive Energy Means Avoiding Grief and Other Difficult Emotions

Some spiritual teachings use the phrase “high vibration” to describe a loving or positive state.

Problems arise when people interpret this to mean that sadness, anger, or grief are signs of failure.

The result can be emotional suppression disguised as spiritual growth.

But grief is not evidence that something is wrong with us.

It is often evidence that someone or something mattered.

Anger can alert us to injustice, harm, or a violated boundary.

Fear can identify risk.

Even uncomfortable emotions carry information.

Maturity does not require us to obey every emotion, nor does it ask us to remain trapped in one. It asks us to acknowledge what we feel, understand what the feeling may be telling us, and choose how to respond.

Avoiding pain does not resolve it.

It often postpones it.

We can also hold more than one emotion at a time.

We can miss someone and feel grateful that we knew them.

We can be frightened and still act courageously.

We can feel disappointed and remain hopeful.

The ability to hold these apparent opposites is not negativity.

It is emotional strength.

Myth 4: Awakening or Self-Awareness Ends Suffering

In spiritual language, “awakening” often refers to seeing ourselves and life more clearly. In everyday language, we might call it increased awareness.

Neither makes us immune to pain or prevents difficult events from happening.

Awareness can, however, change our relationship with what happens.

Pain is a natural response to loss, change, rejection, and uncertainty. Suffering is often intensified by the conclusions we attach to that pain:

“This will never improve.”

“I cannot handle this.”

“My life is ruined.”

Such thoughts are understandable, but they can turn a painful chapter into a permanent story about who we are and what our future holds.

Greater awareness helps us notice that story without automatically accepting it as fact.

Instead of staying only with “Why is this happening to me?” we can gradually ask:

“What do I need now?”

“What choices remain?”

“How can I move through this without abandoning myself?”

This is not forced positivity.

It is the ability to acknowledge reality while remembering that the present moment is not the entirety of our life.

Life may not become easier, but we can become more resilient, compassionate, and capable of responding rather than simply reacting.

Myth 5: Special Abilities or Expertise Equal Maturity

A person may be a gifted intuitive, healer, teacher, therapist, executive, artist, or communicator and still struggle with boundaries, accountability, relationships, or emotional regulation.

Talent and character do not always develop at the same pace.

Ability shows us what someone can do.

Character becomes visible in how that person uses their ability—especially when challenged, corrected, disappointed, or given power.

Can they admit a mistake?

Do they respect other people's autonomy?

Does their behavior reflect the values they teach?

Do people feel safe asking questions or disagreeing with them?

This is particularly important when evaluating leaders, teachers, and public figures.

Confidence, charisma, a large following, an impressive title, or an unusual gift should never exempt anyone from ethics and accountability.

The greater a person's influence, the greater their responsibility to use it carefully.

Maturity also requires courage.

Sometimes courage means speaking an uncomfortable truth, taking a thoughtful risk, or setting a boundary.

At other times, it means staying in a difficult conversation, listening to feedback, or admitting that we were wrong.

Wisdom lies in discerning whether discomfort invites us to grow, warns us of harm, or signals that it is time to leave.

The best measure of maturity is not what a person claims to know. It is how responsibly they live what they know.

Myth 6: Being Loving Means Saying Yes to Everything

Compassion is sometimes confused with constant agreement, endless patience, or unlimited access to our time and energy.

But love without boundaries can become exhaustion, resentment, or enabling.

We can understand why someone behaves as they do without accepting harmful behavior.

We can forgive without pretending nothing happened.

We can care about a person and still limit contact with them.

We can wish someone healing without assuming responsibility for healing them.

A thoughtful no is not necessarily rejection.

It can be an expression of self-respect, honesty, and concern for long-term well-being.

Continually protecting someone from the consequences of their choices may feel kind in the moment, but it can prevent responsibility and growth.

Healthy compassion includes compassion for ourselves.

Our needs, safety, energy, and well-being matter, too.

Mature love does not demand self-abandonment.

It combines kindness with truth and recognizes a vital principle:

Unconditional care does not require unconditional access.

Myth 7: Growth Must Look Extraordinary

We often imagine transformation as a dramatic breakthrough, a powerful vision, a life-changing retreat, a profound realization, or an unmistakable moment of clarity.

Such experiences can be meaningful, but they are not where most growth is demonstrated.

Growth usually looks ordinary.

It is keeping our word when an excuse would be easier.

It is offering an apology without justification.

It is listening to understand rather than waiting to defend ourselves.

It is respecting another person's boundary and learning to honor our own.

It appears when we sit with a grieving friend without trying to fix them, treat a stranger with patience, return the shopping cart, or help without needing recognition.

It is following through on responsibilities, caring for those we love, and forgiving ourselves for what we did not understand in the past.

Retreats, books, meditation, therapy, prayer, and meaningful experiences may open a door.

The real question is whether they change how we live after we walk through it.

Are we becoming more patient?

More honest?

More accountable?

More willing to listen?

Kinder to ourselves and others?

The extraordinary is often built through ordinary choices repeated over time.

A More Grounded Way to Think About Spirituality

As our understanding matures, spirituality may become quieter and less concerned with appearances, labels, or proving what we believe.

We become more comfortable saying, “I don't know.”

We can listen to people whose beliefs differ from ours without feeling threatened.

We stop assuming that one path, practice, or explanation must fit everyone.

We also become more discerning.

We pay less attention to what teachers and leaders claim and more attention to how they behave.

We notice whether their words match their actions, whether they accept responsibility, and whether they respect boundaries.

We stop giving away our judgment simply because someone appears confident or spiritually authoritative.

Most importantly, our values become visible in simple choices.

We pause before reacting.

We tell the truth without using it as a weapon.

We set a boundary without making the other person a villain.

We speak up when something is wrong, even if our voice trembles.

We listen when someone is hurting and resist the urge to make their experience about us.

Whether we call this spiritual maturity, personal development, emotional intelligence, or simply growing wiser, it asks better questions:

• Do people feel respected and heard in my presence?
• Am I living the values I say I believe?
• Can I remain compassionate without abandoning the truth?
• Can I honor another person's humanity while also honoring my own?
• Am I willing to change my mind when new understanding asks me to?

People may never know how many books we have read, workshops we have attended, visions we have experienced, or insights we have collected.

They will remember whether we listened, whether we treated them with dignity, and whether our actions matched our words.

This is the most valuable idea spirituality can offer, even to those who do not identify as spiritual:

Growth is not about rising above our humanity. It is about inhabiting it more fully.

It means becoming loving without enabling, honest without becoming cruel, courageous without becoming reckless, and humble without diminishing ourselves.

In the end, the goal is not to appear enlightened.

It is to become more aware, more responsible, more compassionate, and more fully human.

Leading Beyond the Title

For nearly 30 years, I worked in global corporate organizations, leading teams across cultures, countries, and time zones. I held executive management positions, but I came to understand that my most important role was not managing-it was leading. There is a meaningful difference between the two. A title may give someone authority, but it does not automatically create trust. Leadership is not limited to the person at the head of the table. It can be expressed through influence, integrity, compassion, courage, and the way we make others feel when they work alongside us.

I have always been passionate about people and what allows them to thrive. Throughout my corporate career, I taught communication styles, conflict management, respect for differing worldviews, and how to navigate change. In many ways, this was how I brought my humanitarian and metaphysical values into the workplace. I believed then, as I do now, that people perform at their best when they feel seen, valued, supported, and connected to a greater purpose. That truth matters more than ever.

People Are Asking More of Work-and of Their Leaders

Our workplaces have been shaped by an extraordinary convergence of challenges: a global pandemic, racial and social justice movements, political polarization, financial instability, widening inequality, housing and food insecurity, climate concerns, rapid technological change, and the departure of a large generation of experienced workers.

At the same time, artificial intelligence, automation, remote work, and global collaboration are changing not only where we work but also how we define contribution and value. Many people have reconsidered their relationship with work. They are no longer willing to sacrifice their physical health, emotional well-being, families, or sense of meaning simply to meet an outdated definition of success.

People still want fair compensation and opportunity, but they also want a voice. They want to know that their work matters, that their ideas are welcome, and that their leaders see them as human beings rather than interchangeable resources. Increasingly, we are working to support a meaningful life-not living solely to work.

This is not a passing trend or a lack of commitment. It is an evolution in what people understand a healthy, productive life to be.

Organizations that recognize this shift have an opportunity to build stronger cultures, retain talented people, and become more adaptable. Those that continue to rely exclusively on hierarchy, control, and compliance may find that the methods that once created stability now limit innovation and trust.

From Transactional to Transformational Leadership

Transactional leadership has long been common in organizations. It offers structure, defined roles, clear expectations, and measurable outcomes. These things are valuable, and there are circumstances in which this style is necessary. People need clarity, accountability, and an understanding of what success looks like.

The problem arises when the transaction becomes the entire relationship: complete the task, receive the reward; miss the target, face the consequence. In that environment, people may hesitate to question a process, take a thoughtful risk, or share an unconventional idea. Over time, a culture focused only on output can contribute to competition, disengagement, and burnout.

Transformational leadership does not eliminate structure. It adds humanity, vision, adaptability, and shared purpose to it. It invites people to take responsibility while giving them the trust and support needed to grow. It recognizes that sustainable success is built not only through what a team produces but also through the environment in which people are asked to produce it.

This approach is especially relevant as new generations enter the workforce. Younger employees often expect conversations about mental health, emotional intelligence, mindfulness, purpose, inclusion, and work-life balance to be part of organizational life. Some are also comfortable speaking about intuition, energy, meditation, and other practices that previous generations may have kept separate from professional settings. Not every practice will belong in every workplace, and it should never be imposed. Yet leaders should pay attention to the deeper need beneath these interests: people are seeking wholeness. They do not want to leave their values, sensitivity, creativity, or humanity at the door when they come to work.

The Five Practices of a Transformational Leader

1. Lead by Example

People watch what a leader does, especially under pressure. They notice whether values disappear when deadlines tighten, whether accountability applies to everyone, and whether the leader responds to difficulty with steadiness or blame.

Leading by example means practicing the qualities you want to see in the culture: integrity, creativity, respect, resourcefulness, balance, and responsibility. It also means being willing to do what you ask of others and putting the needs of the shared mission ahead of ego.

Trust grows when a leader's words and actions remain aligned.

2. See the Individual, Not Only the Role

Transformational leaders take time to understand people-their strengths, motivations, aspirations, potential, and challenges. They recognize that two people with the same job description may need different forms of communication, encouragement, or development.

This is not about lowering expectations. It is about helping people find the place where their abilities can contribute most effectively. Sometimes that means coaching someone to grow within a role. At other times, it means acknowledging that the fit is not right and helping create a healthier path forward.

When decisions are based on contribution, potential, and fairness, the whole team notices.

3. Make Curiosity Safe

No leader has every answer. The strongest leaders understand that varied experiences and perspectives can produce better solutions than one voice alone.

Intellectual stimulation means encouraging questions, learning, and thoughtful experimentation. It means listening to ideas that challenge familiar assumptions and allowing people to explore what might be possible.

This requires balancing inspiration with discernment: not every idea will be practical, but every person should be able to offer one without fear of ridicule. Teams become more innovative when they know their leader will support responsible risk-taking and respond constructively when an experiment does not go as planned.

4. Connect the Work to a Meaningful Vision

People are more motivated when they understand why their work matters. A transformational leader does more than distribute assignments; they connect each person's contribution to a larger vision and help the team believe that the vision is achievable.

This is particularly important during loss, uncertainty, or rapid change. Inspirational leadership does not mean pretending everything is positive. It means communicating honestly about what is happening, naming the difficulty, and helping people see a credible way forward.

Hope is most powerful when it is grounded in truth.

5. Pause, Listen, and Adjust

The old idea that a leader must always appear certain can be deeply damaging. Adaptability requires the humility to say, "This is not working," "I was wrong," or "I need help."

Transformational leaders regularly examine their people, projects, and processes. They correct what is misaligned, reinforce what is effective, and recognize progress. They remain engaged even after an initiative appears to be running smoothly because every system changes and every culture requires care.

Imperfection is not evidence of failure. Often, it is the place where the next necessary change becomes visible.

Making Space for Different Ways of Knowing

My own path has never fit neatly into one category. I spent decades as a woman in technology, engineering, and global manufacturing environments while also being intuitive and highly sensitive to energy. I could often feel the moment a team became energized by possibility-or the moment someone's words deflated the room.

At times, I felt like an energetic bulldozer, helping clear a path through structures that were not designed for people like me. Many women and other underrepresented leaders know that feeling. We have pushed against limiting expectations, questioned inherited norms, and made room for those who would follow.

But we must continue asking whether we have cleared enough space-or whether we have simply become comfortable with the progress already made.

Will we recognize the intelligence and creativity of younger generations when they express them differently? Will we remain curious about what they know, or dismiss their perspectives because of their age, language, identity, sensitivity, or way of processing the world?

Labels can be useful when they provide understanding and access to support. They become limiting when they reduce a person to a category or create a line between "them" and "us." The future of leadership depends on our ability to recognize difference without turning it into disconnection.

Intuition also deserves a more grounded place in leadership. It need not compete with facts, data, or strategy. At its most practical, intuition is the ability to notice patterns, emotional undercurrents, inconsistencies, and possibilities before they are fully articulated. When combined with experience, evidence, and ethical judgment, it can deepen a leader's awareness and improve decision-making.

Leadership Belongs to All of Us

You may be an executive, a business owner, a parent, a teacher, an emerging professional, or an individual contributor who has never thought of yourself as a leader. Yet each day, your presence influences the people around you.

The way you listen, respond, encourage, include, and take responsibility helps create the culture you inhabit.

We are living through a changing workforce and a changing consciousness. People are leaving, entering, relocating, redefining success, and questioning systems that were once accepted without discussion. The next decade cannot be led by assuming it will operate like the last.

Humanity has never evolved by standing still. We move through cycles of disruption, discovery, survival, and renewal. Our challenge now is not merely to endure change but to become conscious participants in it.

The leaders our world needs will know how to combine clarity with compassion, structure with creativity, confidence with humility, and practical intelligence with deeper awareness.

They will understand that leadership is not about having all the answers or holding the highest title. It is about creating the conditions in which others can contribute, grow, and shine.

The future of leadership will not be built by one generation alone. It will be built when we are willing to learn from one another-and courageous enough to lead beyond the title.
