About LaVonda

LaVonda Wright began her career at Toyota in 1992 as a receptionist and advanced over 28 years to her final role as a contract analyst before retiring in November 2020. She earned an associate degree in 1983 and attributes her success to her upbringing and the values of love, care, and respect instilled by her parents. Now working part-time in retail, she volunteers by mentoring young adults and single moms, encouraging them to pursue their goals, and supports seniors at Trinity Apostolic Church. Her values center on family, her Christian faith, friends, and coworkers.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with LaVonda

01What do you attribute your success to?

My upbringing and parents who planted a mustard seed of loving, caring, and nourishing in me. I didn't know I was poor until I became an adult because my parents sacrificed so much for all five kids. They taught me to love and respect others and not assume everyone is okay.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't stop. My parents told me don't stop, and even as a young single parent at age 23, I kept going for what I want despite many nights of crying and wondering how I would do it.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be professional: use professional language, dress code, and be respectful. Have at least one professional outfit like a black suit for interviews - don't wear club clothes. Finish your education and don't stop, because if you pause it can turn into years.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family first and foremost, my Christian life, friends, and coworkers. These four things keep me going.
