Her Story

About Lawanda

Lawanda Banks is an educator, author, and visionary leader specializing in early childhood education, family engagement, and culturally responsive learning. As Director of Learning and Innovation at Learning with Lawanda, she designs and implements innovative educational programs that support children from infancy through adolescence while also empowering parents and educators. Her work centers on whole-child development, integrating academic instruction with social-emotional learning, cultural storytelling, and identity-building experiences that foster long-term growth and resilience.

With extensive experience as a business owner, educator, and curriculum designer, Banks is the founder of First Start Kindergarten Prep, LLC, an early education academy focused on closing learning gaps and reimagining how education is delivered. She has developed multi-sensory learning environments, individualized instruction plans, enrichment programs, and experiential field learning opportunities designed to meet diverse student needs. In addition, she has built partnerships with cultural institutions, including the African American Museum of Dallas, to create immersive, history-rich learning experiences that expand students’ worldview and deepen cultural understanding.

Banks began her career in the classroom as a kindergarten teacher, where she developed a strong foundation in instructional practice and child development. She later expanded her impact through educational consulting, program development, and community-based learning initiatives. A published author and recognized educator featured in Marquis Who’s Who in America, she is committed to sustainable educational innovation and generational impact. Through her leadership, Banks continues to build programs that bridge education, family empowerment, and cultural legacy while inspiring learners to grow with confidence and purpose.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Lawanda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to internal grit and disciplined planning. Staying consistent, even when challenges arise, has helped me push through obstacles and keep moving forward. I also rely on thoughtful preparation and clear goal-setting to stay focused and make intentional decisions that support long-term success.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would advise young women entering the field of education to follow their passion and stay true to what truly motivates them, even when external support is limited or uncertain. Confidence in your own abilities and purpose will carry you through challenges and moments of doubt. Trusting yourself, staying committed to your growth, and continuing to show up with dedication can open doors you may not initially see, even in difficult environments.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge I face right now is managing the financial ups and downs that come with running an educational business. June is always a lower income month for us as we transition between school years, and I have to be very careful with our budget during this time. We're investing our marketing dollars and other resources while also preparing for the new school year with a new budget. As we're expanding and growing our virtual private school, I need to wait for enrollments to pick up before I can make larger investments. It's about balancing the opportunities that come up with the financial realities of seasonal enrollment patterns.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important value to me is impact over income. It's not about the money for me, it's about the difference we make. I value the relationships we build and what our business stands for beyond just the financial side. I believe in having others vouch for and validate the work we do, which is why I appreciate platforms that can speak to our mission apart from just me saying it. That external validation and the ability to promote the true purpose of Learning with Lawanda makes a real difference.
