About Leah

Leah Hartzel serves as HR Manager and Acting Director at a manufacturing company in North Wales, Pennsylvania. She began her current role in 2023 after progressing through payroll and HR positions, including time at ADP where she advanced from payroll duties to implementing systems and later became an HR coordinator at another firm. Hartzel holds a teaching degree from Gwynedd Mercy University in Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania, which she pursued with the goal of becoming an elementary teacher before entering the HR field. In her role, she oversees policies, benefits, workers compensation, OSHA compliance, payroll coordination, and manager training while working to position HR as a strategic partner. She is passionate about talent development and has initiated a co-op program to train younger workers. Hartzel attributes her professional success to her deep investment in her work, treating each organization like family, and she advises young women entering the field to never give up when facing uphill battles and to balance the needs of the company and employees. She is preparing to pursue SHRM certification to further her credentials.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Leah

01What do you attribute your success to?

My passion. I am not just an employee. I invest in it like this is kind of like my family. I feel invested always everywhere I've gone. I'm passionate and that shows through completely.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Never give up. Sometimes it may seem like you're going uphill, that it's an uphill battle, but if you feel that that battle is worth fighting, to make sure that you keep fighting it, and do what is best for the company as well as the employee. You're that middle person.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Dealing with stakeholders not prepared for the strategic part of HR. Performance management and training. Retention is a big problem in manufacturing. Hard to keep people because the work can be monotonous.
