Her Story

About Leah

I am the founder, owner, and clinical director of Root to Rise Counseling and Wellness, a private group counseling practice established in 2023. As a business owner and mental health counselor, I wear many different hats in my practice. Clinically, I offer supervision to associates, individual and group therapy to clients, and trauma-informed yoga. Our online presence is solely managed by me as I've created and maintain the website along with the content for all social media pages. For business development, I actively seek out networking opportunities for strategic partnerships and clientele growth. Prior to opening my own practice, I had extensive experience working with university students, young adults, teenagers, and families impacted by mental health struggles. My areas of expertise include trauma-informed care, mental health counseling, leadership development, and creatively meeting people where they're at with their mental health needs. What drives me most is being a working mom and showing up for my business so I can show up for my two daughters and husband. They are my purpose and my why, and they keep me motivated and grounded. I came from a very difficult upbringing where my family was negatively impacted by addiction and undiagnosed mental health struggles, and they weren't able to receive the support they needed. As such, showing up for myself and my family to partner with clients on their mental health journey, is a personally driven professional pursuit. I have a deep amount of gratitude that I am able to support the mental health of others.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the people who championed me and saw what I was capable of, even when I didn't believe in myself. Financially, college wasn't accessible with me, and the first company I worked for offered a tuition reimbursement program. My boss and mentor at the time paid my tuition in the beginning of the semester, and then each paycheck they took out a certain amount, and at the end of the semester, if I passed, I got that money back and could apply it to the next semester. My mentor truly made college possible for me and showed me what I was capable of. Beyond my mentor, I also attribute my success to my husband and my loved ones who believe in me. Lastly, having a strong, mental mindset of abundance and opportunities have greatly benefitted me. It's easy to get swept up in what might go wrong, what I may be lacking, or the possibility of failure, but actively redirecting those thoughts has made a significant difference for me.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say don't give up on yourself. In our world, there are a lot of obstacles and barriers that can get in the way that aren't even ours to begin with - like societal conditioning and how women are treated, especially BIPOC women and LGBTQIA+ women. If you have something that really matters to you, it's okay if no one believes you or if no one sees your vision. Stay grounded in who you are and make that path for yourself. Connect with like-minded folks as well so you can build that community for yourself.
