Her advocacy journey began as a student parent navigating the challenges of CalWORKS, domestic violence, and systemic barriers while raising a family. These lived experiences fueled her commitment to helping others overcome obstacles and access opportunities for success. As a lifelong learner, devoted mother, and community leader, LeAna brings a unique perspective to her work, using both personal experience and professional expertise to create meaningful change for families across California.
Throughout her career, LeAna has built an impressive record of advancing family engagement, educational access, health equity, and youth wellness. In 2014, she testified before the California Senate Budget Committee, contributing to the restoration of Denti-Cal coverage through Medi-Cal, a significant policy victory benefiting millions of Californians. She has served in impactful roles with organizations including Oakland Promise, Summer Search, and Alameda County Behavioral Health as an AmeriCorps VISTA alum. Her work has included engaging thousands of families through college readiness and financial literacy programs, strengthening community partnerships, and expanding access to mentorship and educational opportunities for students and parents alike.
Today, LeAna serves as Co-Chair and Board Member of California Mental Health Advocacy for Children and Youth, where she helps lead statewide initiatives promoting youth mental wellness and community advocacy. A recent breast cancer survivor and candidate for the Oakland school board, she continues to advocate passionately for children, families, and underserved communities. Beyond her professional and volunteer work, LeAna treasures time with her husband and three children, enjoying family barbecues, camping trips, dancing, and community events. She also has a creative side, finding joy in crafting, designing charcuterie boards, and bringing people together through hospitality and service.

Ten minutes with LeAna
01What do you attribute your success to?
My grandmother, my children, and my family are my backbone. I was raised with manners and proper English which has gotten me into a lot of rooms. Valuing family over things, and being vulnerable enough to tell my personal story.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
You don't need a degree to be smart, you are already smart. Relationships are what matter.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Know you are enough, stand for something, be authentic and have integrity, lean into who you are and your skills. Network and build positive relationships. Study what you're interested in, be a lifelong learner and find a way to give back in your own community.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Getting folks to see the value of a person who hasn't taken their path, especially those without traditional pedigrees like Ivy League education.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity - being a genuinely good person. Holding folks accountable. Being brave and courageous using my voice.
