Her Story
About LeChandra
I started my healthcare career as a certified nursing assistant in 1997, working in facilities for about 10 years while building my foundation in patient care. In 2005, I went back to school for my medical coding and billing certification, and while studying, I continued doing CNA work and POI work for an additional five years. I worked as a Certified Professional Coder from 2007 to 2018, gaining deep expertise in the coding side of healthcare. In 2017, I earned my Associate's degree in healthcare management from Ultimate Medical Academy online, which opened the door to my Business Office Assistant position in 2018. Just one year later, in 2019, when my boss left, he recommended me for his position as Business Office Manager, and I've held that role ever since. In my current role, I manage accounts receivable and receive payments for our long-term care residents, oversee billing for Medicaid, Medicare, third-party insurances, and Medicare Advantage plans for skilled patients, and submit Florida Medicaid applications for residents who have declined in health and need long-term care. I help families through that entire process. I supervise five receptionists and an Assistant Business Office Manager who helps with the Medicaid application process, assist with admissions when there are insurance questions about billing Medicare days allowable, and oversee accounts payable for the facility, processing invoicing from all our different vendors. I'm currently working towards my bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in human resources at Southern New Hampshire University, which I started in October 2023. I also hold a core license to be an assisted living administrator and am a public notary and notary signing agent, part of the National Notary Association.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with LeChandra
01What do you attribute your success to?
Being a single mom has really helped develop my drive. My kids are what push me forward so I can show them good work ethics and the importance of working for what you want and what you believe in. One day, my dream is to build a legacy for them and just show them that they can achieve their goals. I want to be a positive role model for my kids and demonstrate through my own actions what's possible when you stay committed and work hard.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I can't really say I've received specific career advice from someone, but my personal philosophy is to put your all into what you do. Love what you do, and you'll never work a day in your life. That's what drives me and keeps me motivated in my career.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be true to yourself, but also have compassion for what you do. Respect yourself, and others will respect you. It's important to stay authentic while bringing genuine care and empathy to your work, especially in healthcare where you're serving people during vulnerable times in their lives.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge in my field right now is dealing with government changes. The political aspects of healthcare are constantly shifting, affecting everything from reimbursement rates to insurance regulations. These government and political changes impact how we operate and serve our long-term care residents on a daily basis.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, honesty, and respect are the values most important to me in both my work and personal life.
