Lei Rao, MBA, is a distinguished leader and innovator in the chemical and plastics industries, currently serving as the Handbook Chair and Past Chair of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Building and Infrastructure Division Board. With extensive experience in regional market P&L management, business development, global strategic marketing, and application technology (R&D), Lei has contributed significantly to advancing plastics and chemical solutions across multiple sectors, including PU foams, wires & cables, insulations, paints and coatings, and multipurpose lubricants. Her career is marked by a commitment to leading cross-functional teams, launching innovative products, and fostering collaboration to achieve measurable business results. Lei’s professional journey spans over three decades, beginning as a process chemist and progressing to leadership roles in global chemical companies such as Vanderbilt Chemicals and Lonza. She has successfully managed global business development initiatives, coordinated high-impact innovation projects, and driven growth in new markets across North America, Europe, and Asia. Lei has also been instrumental in authoring and guiding chapters for the CRC Handbook of Plastics in Building & Infrastructure, further cementing her influence as a thought leader in her field. In addition to her professional achievements, Lei holds multiple advanced degrees, including an MBA in Finance from the University of Houston Clear Lake, a Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Houston, and advanced studies in Polymer Chemistry and Physics. Outside of work, she enjoys singing, dancing, traveling, and writing poetry, while actively contributing to literary and cultural organizations such as the Chinese Writer Organization and the North America Chinese Women Writers Association. Known for her motto, “Lead and support teams to achieve goals and have fun,” Lei combines technical expertise with mentorship and creativity, making her a respected and dynamic figure in both her professional and personal communities.

My advice to young women entering this industry is to find a role you truly love and fully embrace the work you are doing. When your passion aligns with your profession, it fuels growth, resilience, and long-term fulfillment.
