Her Story

About Leigh

Leigh Balatgek is the founder of Higher Ground Rooftop Yoga, an outdoor-only rooftop yoga studio in Austin, Texas, which she opened about two months ago after hosting pop-up events for the past couple of years. She has been in the yoga entrepreneur space for three years, following a career as a physician assistant where she worked in a urology clinic for about a year and then in geriatric home-based medicine. Balatgek earned a bio degree from the University of Pittsburgh, attended PA school for two years in Pennsylvania, and completed a five-month yoga teacher training program. She holds an active certification with Yoga Alliance and is a member of the American Academy of Physician Associates. Her areas of specialization include yoga teaching and building communities centered around wellness. Balatgek attributes her success to a strong work ethic instilled by her parents, who were business owners, and to her personal health struggles that led her to yoga, which helped her heal and inspired her to share that gift with others. She values balance, listening to her intuition, and living in alignment with her beliefs. In addition to her studio work, she has organized benefit classes for flood victims in Kerr County.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Leigh

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a strong work ethic instilled by my parents who were business owners and modeled balance between work and family. My own health struggles led me to yoga which helped me heal and inspired me to share that gift with others through my studio.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

It really takes a lot of faith and belief in your offering. Find the thing that you love or that you really feel you could commit to. If it doesn't feel quite right, honor that feeling and keep waiting until something does come around that feels right.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include competition in Austin's saturated fitness and yoga market, marketing and building social media presence while valuing balance away from screens. Opportunities lie in normalizing outdoor rooftop yoga to connect people with nature in a comfortable way and expanding the concept beyond Austin.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Balance between working hard and resting or playing. Listening to my intuition or inner guide. Wellness and alignment, living in alignment with my beliefs and honoring when something feels off.
