About Leilani

Leilani Carver-Madalon, Ph.D., is a professor, keynote speaker, and writer based in Saint Louis, Missouri, where she has spent seventeen years shaping the field of higher education. She currently serves as a Full Professor of Strategic Communication, Leadership and Marketing at Maryville University, where she also directs the undergraduate and graduate communication programs and teaches within the John E. Simon School of Business. Before dedicating herself to academia, she spent nearly a decade working across industries such as banking, consulting, and mobile technology, including a stint in corporate training at Sprint Telecommunications, and she also taught English abroad in China. Though she never set out to become a professor, a mentor's encouragement during her graduate studies led her to pursue her doctorate, a decision that redirected the entire course of her career. Beyond the classroom, Dr. Carver-Madalon has built a reputation as a sought-after voice on communication, executive presence, and leadership. She has delivered a TEDx Gateway Arch talk titled "Scripts that Ignite Your Power," was selected as a speaker for the U.S. State Department, and lent her expertise to organizations such as the Fempreneurs program supporting women entrepreneurs in Sicily. Her insights have been featured in major outlets including Forbes, USA Today, Fast Company, and the Huffington Post. Through her consulting practice, Carver & Company Consulting, LLC, she works as an executive coach and strategist, drawing on years of research and real-world experience to help individuals and organizations communicate more effectively and lead with greater authenticity. She is currently writing a book on practical leadership strategies, informed by interviews with accomplished female executives from around the world. Dr. Carver-Madalon's work is grounded in a deep commitment to mentorship, empowerment, and self-compassion, values reflected in her recognition as a Missouri Athletic Club Woman of Distinction and a two-time honoree of Maryville University's Woman of Distinction and Academic Spotlight awards. An avid traveler who has visited forty-eight countries, she weaves her global experiences into her teaching, research, and public speaking, believing firmly that leadership is not defined by title but by the ability to help others recognize the possibilities within themselves. Whether mentoring students, coaching executives, or advocating for greater representation of women in academic leadership, she continues to champion the idea that everyone deserves the chance to build their own table when one doesn't already exist for them.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Leilani

01What do you attribute your success to?

I never expected to become a professor, but a mentor encouraged me to pursue my Ph.D. and saw potential in me before I recognized it in myself, and that guidance changed the entire direction of my life. Now, in my seventeenth year of teaching, I've received more than four hundred thank-you notes from students, which tells me my true gift lies in helping people see their own potential before they see it themselves. I credit my success to positive self-talk, treating myself with kindness, and surrounding myself with a personal "board of directors" made up of mentors and friends who nurture and support my growth.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The most important person I ever talk to is myself, and if I don't believe in and speak positively to myself, no one else can truly believe in me either. I hold myself to the same standard I'd use with a friend — if I wouldn't say something to a friend, I won't say it to myself. Women in particular can be far too hard on themselves, and I've learned that self-compassion is essential to real success.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women to figure out what they love and identify their true purpose, because they should feel empowered to rise to whatever level they aspire to. It's important to surround yourself with people who will champion and advocate for you, and if the opportunity you want doesn't exist yet, go create it yourself — build your own table.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Women remain underrepresented in academia, particularly in business school leadership, even though we should make up at least fifty-one percent of business professors. The pipeline for women advancing beyond director-level roles is broken, and I believe men need to do more to actively champion women's advancement in these spaces.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Curiosity, compassion, authenticity, connection, and empowerment sit at the center of everything I do, both professionally and personally. I believe people thrive when they're encouraged to become their most powerful selves while still being treated with kindness, dignity, and understanding. I also deeply value adventure and lifelong learning — whether I'm traveling, cooking, teaching, researching leadership, writing, or spending time with family and friends — because these experiences broaden my perspective and deepen my connections with others.
