Her Interview
Ten minutes with Lela
01What do you attribute your success to?
A lot of things. I attribute it to the fact that I had an upbringing that allowed me to be in a space to understand what I do now. I attribute it to my faith, and I attribute it to dedication and resilience, and friendship, honestly, because nothing that you do in life can be done alone. So, to have the mentors and have the friends that I have today have definitely supported a lot of my successes and where I've been.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Recently two things. One is to never change my values. Being a creative entrepreneur and woman in this field, people expect you to play stupid and play small. A mentor said just know when to say things, you don't have to play stupid. Another mentor said business is about you first and there has to be an equal exchange of value. If you're just pouring into people without getting anything in return, you're never gonna be successful.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Find your people and never give up. It gets hard, but it's worth it, and ask for help. But also use your discernment.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Because I'm more in the executive position, the challenges are dealing with artists directly who want to be independent now but don't understand they still need a team. They don't know what roles are and how to function within that team as the artist while still remaining independent. Biggest problems are roles in team building and the understanding of the business behind the craft.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Ensuring authenticity back into creation. With every decision, the question is is this authentic for me, does this align with how I feel about the world, and is this authentic for the person that's contributing. If it's not, then I don't want to do it. It all ties into don't sell your soul, which is as simple as doing something that you don't believe in.
