Her Story
About Lequita
I retired from the FDA in May of 2023 after over 30 years in federal government, including 22 years as an investigator performing inspections domestically and internationally in clinical trials, pharmaceuticals, food, medical devices, and biologics. My science background in medical technology led me to this role where I ensured compliance. Now on disability, I channel my experience into advocacy with the National MS Society, focusing on congressional champions, NIH funding, and Pharmacy Benefit Managers reform. I have had articles published in the Chicago Tribune and appeared on ABC News related to my advocacy work.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Lequita
01What do you attribute your success to?
My success comes from my mom and the way she raised us with a strong work ethic. She taught me boundaries and how to focus on work without distractions unless it's an emergency, which shaped how I approach my career and personal life.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Network and stay in contact with people you meet at trainings and events. I regret not maintaining connections outside Chicago which could have helped advance my career further.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You have to be in the mindset to learn and train yourself independently and be aggressive about it. No one can hold your hand, especially now with fewer senior people available to train new hires.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges are that federal government is not hiring or retaining knowledgeable people, funding has been cut across agencies including Social Security and retirement, and healthcare is being affected with procedures and monies impacted for everyone in the United States.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Always do the right thing and maintain integrity. I never cut corners during inspections and wanted my reputation to be irrefutable because I recorded findings to the best of my ability.
