About Leslie

After 20 years as a stay-at-home mom, I'm embarking on a new chapter in my life by pursuing certification in medical billing and coding. I initially started online school a couple years ago at a different institution where I was going for my business degree, but I switched schools and decided to pursue medical billing and coding instead. This field appealed to me because it offers opportunities for at-home work, which provides the flexibility I'm looking for. My aunt used to do medical billing and coding for insurance companies, and many people, including my mom, have told me I would be really good at this work because I have administration skills and back office skills. Throughout my life, I've gained diverse work experience including substitute teaching, working at Ross stores, working for a nonprofit organization in Kingwood, and running a house remodeling and sheetrock repair business with my ex-husband. Now I'm focused on building my own career and creating a healthier lifestyle for myself. My daughter, who is a high school senior heading to Texas State to pursue her dream of becoming a pediatrician, is a very big influence on me and keeps me motivated to do something with myself and start a career.

Ten minutes with Leslie

01What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important thing to me right now is keeping my goals small and just accomplishing them, showing myself that I'm able to do the things I'm trying to do. After leaving my ex-husband of 20 years, I've been really focused on making myself a healthier person all the way around, both mentally and physically. My marriage wasn't the healthiest, so empowering myself and getting the strength, motivation, and courage to take the step away from that and be on my own, because I knew that was going to be better for me, that took a lot. I've started a new organic diet with more fruits and vegetables, I'm working out, and I love to read. Everything I'm doing is focused on creating a more healthy lifestyle and becoming a healthier person mentally and physically. Having high expectations for myself is important, but I don't want to set them too high because I've had a lot of road bumps throughout the years that got in the way of my goals.
