Leslie L. Olmstead is the Director of Mineral Rights at KoBold Metals and a lifelong advocate for responsible mineral exploration. A passionate exploration and mining professional with over three decades of education and experience, Leslie brings both technical depth and human connection to the science of land and resource stewardship.

Initially on a pre-med path, Leslie’s career took a serendipitous turn when she discovered the world of geology and mining. The science of the Earth—and the promise of discovery in mining—sparked a fascination that has guided her career ever since. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Geology/Earth Science from Oregon State University, building a career grounded in land management, land acquisition, environmental permitting, regulatory compliance, and project logistics. Beyond the technical aspects, Leslie remains captivated by the broader story of how natural resources shape civilization—reading about commodities such as salt, sugar, and tea, and the transformative discoveries they inspired. This curiosity extends to her professional focus: understanding how countries and jurisdictions value, govern, and steward their lands continues to inform her global approach to mineral rights and responsible exploration.

Over the past 28 years, Leslie has held senior roles with respected mining companies, including Teck American Incorporated, Newmont Goldcorp Corporation, and Agnico Eagle Mines Limited. She has managed millions of acres of mineral rights, ensuring access, compliance, and exploration success across diverse and often complex jurisdictions. Her work blends strategic vision with operational precision, always focused on advancing projects in ways that respect both people and the planet.

A dedicated mentor and champion of continuous improvement, Leslie believes that sharing knowledge is essential to sustaining the industry’s future. She takes pride in coaching emerging professionals, fostering curiosity, and building high-performing, collaborative teams that thrive on integrity and innovation.

Outside of work, Leslie enjoys gardening, cooking, and spending time with her 17-year-old twin sons, whose curiosity about the world mirrors her own. She is an active contributor to the American Exploration & Mining Association, helping advance best practices and policy dialogue in mineral rights and environmental stewardship.

Leslie’s career reflects a rare blend of technical expertise, mentorship, and personal passion — guided by a belief that understanding the land beneath our feet is not just about resources, but about responsibility and connection.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

My success is rooted in two constants: a lifelong belief in the transformative power of education and the steadfast support of my family. Education has opened doors and shaped the way I think and lead, while my family’s encouragement has grounded me, giving me the confidence to meet challenges with determination and optimism.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

A former mentor once shared invaluable advice that has shaped my approach to leadership: when faced with conflict or tension, never underestimate the power of a genuine apology. It resets the dynamic, restores trust, and opens space for understanding and collaboration. Equally important, they taught me the value of leaving others a way out with dignity—because true resolution isn’t about winning; it’s about allowing everyone to move forward with respect intact. Those lessons reminded me that leadership isn’t about being right—it’s about preserving relationships, fostering empathy, and creating an environment where respect and progress can thrive.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to never settle for less than they deserve, to cultivate self-trust, and to lead with integrity by uplifting others rather than tearing them down. Success is never built on comparison or competition, but on confidence, continuous learning, and collaboration. Support other women—don’t tear them down. Celebrate their wins, share your knowledge, and create space for others to rise. True success is measured not only by what you achieve, but by how you help others achieve alongside you.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is discerning whether an opportunity is the right fit. This takes careful evaluation, self-awareness, and a clear understanding of both short-term goals and long-term vision to ensure each step supports meaningful personal and professional growth. It’s easy to chase opportunity for its own sake, but true progress comes from aligning decisions with purpose and values.

Professionally, one of the greatest challenges—and opportunities—is awareness. There are still too few people who truly understand what a hardrock mineral rights land professional does. Yet, that lack of understanding represents an incredible opening for education and inspiration. Our industry is aging, and we need new, enthusiastic, and curious minds to discover just how fascinating land and mineral rights work can be. For those willing to learn, there’s a world of opportunity in this field—one that rewards curiosity, integrity, and persistence.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me—in both my work and personal life—are integrity, honesty, and loyalty. These principles serve as my foundation, guiding every decision and interaction. Integrity ensures I stay true to my word and uphold the highest standards, even when no one is watching. Honesty fosters transparency and trust, both in leadership and in relationships. And loyalty—whether to people, purpose, or principles—creates the stability that allows collaboration and growth to flourish. Together, these values keep me grounded, consistent, and aligned with what matters most, no matter the circumstance.
