About Leyana
Leyana Harris serves as a facilities manager for mental health at Newport Health in Seymour, Connecticut. She has been in the facilities management field for over five years, joining her current company a few months ago after working with a mental health company for the state of Connecticut. Prior to entering facilities management in 2023, Harris worked as a fire inspector following her time at the fire academy and fire department. Her main areas of expertise include fire prevention, building codes, NFPA standards, Joint Commission compliance, and she holds OSHA certification. Harris attended Job Corps and Youth Build, completing a construction carpentry roofing program. She has received several awards including Hero Awards and recognition for her disaster services work during Hurricane Katrina, where she contributed over ten years with the Red Cross. In addition to her professional roles, Harris has volunteered at shelters and soup kitchens. She attributes her success to her family, friends, and especially her grandfather.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my family, friends, and especially my grandfather who helped shape my journey.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
When you're up, don't look down on people because you never know what might happen.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You don't have to go to college; you can go to trade school and come out making $100,000 with no college debt. I was a trades girl and learned hands-on.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I don't have any challenges at the moment.
