Her Story
About Lidia
Lidia Sambucetti is an accomplished oncology drug discovery leader with more than 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Her career has focused on translating novel biological targets and scientific concepts into innovative therapies, advancing programs from early discovery toward clinical development. She earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, where she developed a passion for oncology research at the molecular level, and pursued a second postdoctoral fellowship in infectious diseases at Stanford University.
Throughout her career, Sambucetti has held senior scientific leadership roles across the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors, including at Novartis, where she contributed to advancing the concept of therapeutics that modify chromatin and helped lead the development of the FDA-approved cancer therapy Farydak (panobinostat). Her expertise spans oncology drug discovery, novel target identification and validation, pharmacology, translational research, biomarker development, and strategic program leadership. She is also a member of the American Association for Cancer Research and has contributed to innovative approaches involving challenging cancer targets and emerging technologies such as liquid biopsy and circulating tumor cell detection.
Sambucetti is passionate about mentoring scientists, supporting high-performing teams, and helping translate promising discoveries into meaningful clinical applications. She currently serves as an advisor to Stanford University's SPARK Translational Research Program, helping academic researchers advance early-stage therapeutic concepts toward clinical translation. She attributes her success to being open-minded, determined, resourceful, and resilient, qualities that have enabled her to navigate complex challenges and embrace new opportunities throughout her career. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to maintaining an open mind, staying determined in the face of challenges, and remaining adaptable when circumstances change. I have learned to pivot when necessary, draw on my resourcefulness to find effective solutions, and build resilience through every experience. These qualities have enabled me to navigate obstacles, embrace new opportunities, and continue moving forward with confidence and purpose.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering my industry is to follow their instincts and pay attention to the work that genuinely excites them. Pursue what you love, remain open to learning and growth, and allow your passion to guide your career decisions. When you are truly engaged in your work, you are more likely to find fulfillment, stay motivated through challenges, and build a career that is both meaningful and rewarding.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge and opportunity in my field right now is the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. AI is transforming the way we work, creating new efficiencies and possibilities while also requiring professionals to continually adapt and develop new skills. I see this evolution as a significant opportunity to embrace innovation, learn continuously, and find new ways to leverage technology to improve processes and create greater value.

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are making a meaningful difference and having a positive impact on others. I am motivated by opportunities to help people, contribute to meaningful outcomes, and use my skills and experiences to create positive change.
