Her Story
About Lien
Lien Amin is a PhD candidate in STEM Education based in Boulder, Colorado. She earned her bachelor's degree in biology and completed an accelerated master's program. Prior to her doctoral studies, she worked as a high school teacher in a Title I school in Florida, where she focused on providing representation for students of color in science fields. Her research explores sports as culturally sustaining learning sites, teaching data collection and interpretation through athletics, and she has collaborated with the TILT Lab at Northwestern on initiatives including a STEM and sports clinic at NBA All-Star Weekend. She has also shifted focus to research in a space laboratory, examining space weather phenomena such as coronal mass ejections and solar flares. Additionally, Lien completed over 1,700 service hours with AmeriCorps working with schools.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
To take care of myself. Self-care is important during the PhD, including going outdoors, hiking, showing grace to yourself when things can't get done, and communicating with your team.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
You have to learn to be uncomfortable and enjoy the process of learning. Find the joy in what you do for yourself. Stick to your core values like being kind, empathetic, and joyful. Find an advisor who holistically cares about you as a human being.
