Her Story
About Lien
I've spent over 20 years in the marketing industry, and it's been quite a journey. I originally started out studying English because I wanted to become a secondary teacher - high school or college level. But then I got a job in marketing and I never looked back. I fell so in love with the industry that I actually changed my major from English to communications. Now I serve as Director of Client Strategy, and I'm fortunate to be in an industry where there are a lot of influential women at the executive level. What has contributed to my success is definitely that sense of learning and flexibility, as well as being willing to try new things. I've learned to be brave - and I think that's really what it is when you're trying new things. Being brave has played a big role in where I am today. The marketing industry is definitely being disrupted by AI right now, which is both a risk and an opportunity. It's a risk if you don't know how to use it, but when you're prepared to use those skills in AI to help accomplish your client's or your organization's goals, that's where the opportunities come.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I was really surprised by the nomination, and I don't consider myself overly successful, but if I think about what has contributed to my success, it's definitely been that sense of learning and flexibility, as well as being willing to try new things. I think it goes back to having a flexibility kind of mindset and learning to try new things. One more thing I thought of is being brave. I think sometimes we don't think of it that way - we think, oh, we're trying a new thing, but really what you're doing is being brave. And I think being brave has played a big role in where I am today. I definitely fall within that category where I typically wait until I'm at 90% before taking on something new, but if you can channel that bravery sooner, I think it will benefit you.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Keep learning. Keep learning so that you're ready for any curveballs the industry or organization that you work in throws at you. I think making learning a lifelong goal and habit is really important.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think the same advice that I received that we spoke about earlier. Really learn, keep learning, make learning a lifelong goal and habit, and don't be afraid to be brave.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I just was in a discussion about this the other day, and I think there are lots of challenges right now we're seeing across the marketplace within marketing, but there are lots of opportunities too. We are definitely one of those industries that are being disrupted by AI. That is both a risk and an opportunity. It's a risk if you don't know how to use it, right? So learning new things, seeing how you can get better with it - I think it's definitely a trend, and those opportunities come when you're prepared to use those skills in AI to help accomplish your client's or your organization's goals.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Family is important to me. Integrity is important to me. Hard work is important to me. These are all things that have shaped me. And also being genuine - and I think that goes back hand-in-hand with integrity, but honesty and being genuine, that has definitely been an important value. Not only in who I am, being true to who I am, but also in the people who are around me. When it comes to restoring myself outside of work, I think that goes back to some of the things that I value - I spend time with my family, I love to take walks with my dog to kind of free and reset myself, and I love to exercise. I think that's an important part of keeping my body strong at the same time.
