About Lily

Lily Scarlett is the Director of Development and Communications at Acts4Rwanda, where she has served for approximately one year. In this role, she focuses on creating relationships with potential donors to support the organization's mission of educating, feeding, and discipling street children in Rwanda. With 25 years of experience in the nonprofit field, Scarlett previously held the position of Associate Director of Development at the American Diabetes Association. She attributes her success to perseverance and a steadfast focus on organizational missions. Scarlett holds an undergraduate degree in art history from Stony Brook University and a certification in fundraising from the University of Boston. She also volunteers with children at her church and values integrity, compassion, and service in both her professional and personal life.

01What do you attribute your success to?

Perseverance and focusing on the mission. It's just been a huge blessing my career. So, just really focusing on the mission of the organizations I've worked for. The mission is very, very important, and I would always keep that at the center of my work.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

To really be yourself, share your passion, be fair to everyone, and be a mentor to those you come in contact with in a leadership position.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Bring a strong determination to build and to work on the mission as if it was directly affecting your life.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges are being able to reach out to as many people possible, to include those that haven't heard about us yet. To really communicate what our mission is doing, and trying to get people to come along and invest in our mission. Opportunities are tremendous with different ways to engage those donors through media, engagement and contact.
