What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my strong faith in God, a hardworking upbringing with parents who modeled entrepreneurship and strong work ethic, my love of continuous learning, guidance from mentors and life coaches, the courage to embrace opportunities without fear, and doing work that aligns with my purpose. I have overcome divorce, bankruptcy, single parenting, unexpected job transitions, health issues, and a multitude of life's peaks and valleys.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
To find an occupation you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life; to seek out mentors and life coaches who can provide guidance, honest feedback, and help identify strengths and blind spots for self-awareness for continuous improvement; and you are never to old to start anything!
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would advise young men and women entering nursing to recognize there are no stupid questions, the true learning starts after you pass your boards, seek mentors, spend time at the bedside early to stabilize time management and basic independent skills, cultivate critical thinking, learn to trust your instincts, always LISTEN to patients and their families, avoid over-relying on technology, and never hesitate to call for help in whatever that looks like (doctors, other nurses, other disciplines). You do not and will not ever know everything.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges in nursing today include clinician shortages and retention challenges, staff burnout, insurance influences on decision-making corporate pressures and focus more on productivity than human connection, and financial burdens of healthcare settings.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in life, personally and professionally, include trust, integrity, honesty, service, purpose, continuous learning, work ethic, mentorship, and advocacy.
