About Linda
Linda James-Rivera is the Founder and Executive Director of Northwest Mutual Aid Collective (NWMAC), a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to combating food insecurity and food waste in Northwest Philadelphia. A lifelong Philadelphian, Linda established NWMAC in 2020, drawing on more than 30 years of administrative experience and two decades of management expertise. Her leadership is grounded in a commitment to equitable food access, community empowerment, dignity, and sustainable solutions that center the voices of the people being served.
Under Linda’s leadership, NWMAC has grown from serving just three households and operating a single community refrigerator to supporting thousands of individuals through home food deliveries, community refrigerators, grassroots partnerships, and pantry support programs. The organization’s Home Delivery Program provides food to families and individuals each week, while its Pantry Support Program helps community organizations distribute nutritious food to residents in need. NWMAC has also expanded its operations into a 5,000-square-foot facility, enabling the organization to increase food distribution, strengthen partnerships, and broaden its impact across Northwest Philadelphia.
Linda’s work reflects a deep dedication to community service, food justice, and nonprofit leadership. Her contributions have earned recognition through the Greater Delaware Valley Policy Fellowship from The Tabor Foundation and Temple University’s Outstanding Community Partner Award. She is also a member of the Black Nonprofit Chief Executives of Philadelphia, further demonstrating her commitment to strengthening nonprofit leadership and advancing systemic change. Through NWMAC, Linda continues to build collaborative, community-centered solutions aimed at reducing food insecurity and ensuring that no neighbor goes hungry.
