About Linda

Linda Johnson serves as Senior Administrative Assistant for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, College of Health Professions, bringing over 30 years of experience in administrative support within higher education health sciences. Her career path has centered on administration, and she earned her bachelor's degree by returning to school part-time for eight years after her father's death from cancer, never missing an assignment or semester. Johnson is a Capstone alumni member of the IAAP and aspires to join SHRM while pursuing her goal of passing the Certified Administrative Professional test. She takes particular pride in her educational achievement, which is commemorated by a poem bearing her name displayed in her office. Johnson attributes her professional success to her role as a collaborative team member who helps solve problems by combining ideas with colleagues, noting that teamwork makes the dream work. Outside of work, she values family and God most highly, having previously volunteered with the nonprofit Youth Service Bridges focused on youth and regularly contributing to the food bank and United Way. Her advice to young women emphasizes pursuing education, praying, listening to elders, and giving one's best effort at any age.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Linda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being a big part of the administrative team at the College of Health Professions. We solve a lot of problems together by putting our thoughts and ideas together. Teamwork makes the dream work, and my decisions matter as part of that collaborative effort.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Go to school. Make up in your mind you want to go to school. Knowledge is everything. First of all, you pray about it. Go to school. Learn as much as you can. Listen to your elders. They're full of wisdom. Give your all in whatever you do. Put your best foot forward. You're never too old to learn. Don't wait till you get to my age to go back to school.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is passing the Certified Administrative Professional test. It has been so hard for me and I'm still struggling to get it, but one day I'm going to pass it.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family and God are most important. Spending time with family, listening to family and others because they might have better ideas. Keeping an open mind. At work they are family-oriented which matters to me. You might get 20 jobs in your life but you got only one family.
