Her Story

About Lisa

Lisa Best is a dedicated educator, athletic leader, and wellness professional with 12 years of teaching experience, including 11 years at Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen in Colorado. She currently serves in several leadership capacities, including Physical Education Teacher, Athletic Director, Activities Director, Wellness Director, middle school sports coach, and gym and facility manager. Lisa earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition from Florida State University, where she also worked as a personal trainer and participated on the university’s crew team. Before entering education, she operated her own in-home fitness business, Fitness on the Move, building valuable experience in fitness, entrepreneurship, and client engagement.

Throughout her career at Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen, Lisa has demonstrated a strong ability to create and expand programs that benefit students and the broader school community. She helped transform the physical education program from one with limited equipment and facilities into a more comprehensive program offering basketball, volleyball, and other athletic opportunities. She also expanded after-school programming from a single class serving approximately 70 students into multiple daily offerings, giving students opportunities to explore sports, chess, STEM, board games, and other interests while creating leadership and income opportunities for fellow teachers. Beyond athletics, Lisa founded Health Night, bringing local businesses and families together for wellness education, and has contributed to regenerative farming, greenhouse, biodiversity, and outdoor learning initiatives.

At the heart of Lisa’s educational philosophy is her belief that sports and physical activity can teach lessons that extend far beyond physical performance. She is passionate about helping young people overcome fear, develop confidence and resilience, practice good sportsmanship, and discover their individual capabilities. Her patient, encouraging approach is reflected in the story of a student she coached through a fear of balls who eventually became a successful basketball player and continued the sport into high school. Inspired by her father’s entrepreneurial and philanthropic example, Lisa brings initiative, generosity, and community-minded leadership to her work. Her contributions have earned professional recognition, including an Honored Listee designation from Marquis Who’s Who and recognition in Evergreen Magazine, while her interests in hiking, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and mountain biking reflect her lifelong commitment to an active and balanced lifestyle.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Lisa

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my father’s example as an entrepreneur and philanthropist, which taught me the value of initiative, generosity, and creating opportunities for others. I also credit my willingness to take action, adapt to changing needs, and build programs from the ground up. Most importantly, I measure success by the positive impact I have on others, such as helping students overcome challenges and grow with confidence.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is to live and plan one day at a time. Rather than becoming overwhelmed by what the future may bring, I focus on what I can accomplish today and trust that consistent progress will create new opportunities over time.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering education is to develop strong self-awareness and commit to continuous personal growth. Teaching is about more than sharing academic knowledge—it’s about bringing your experiences, values, and wisdom into the classroom. Make learning engaging and meaningful, and always remember the lasting impact you can have on a student’s confidence, development, and future.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in education is ensuring teachers are fairly compensated for the many responsibilities they carry. At the same time, I see tremendous opportunities to expand learning beyond the traditional classroom through wellness programs, sports, after-school activities, health education, community partnerships, and hands-on initiatives. These experiences can help students thrive while strengthening connections among schools, families, and the broader community.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are balance, personal growth, confidence, good sportsmanship, community involvement, and helping others. I believe in creating opportunities for people to grow, overcome fears, and build resilience through meaningful experiences. I also value being present for my family and believe that sports and activities can teach lifelong lessons about teamwork, courage, perseverance, and confidence.
