About Lisa
Lisa A. Conway, MSW brings more than 30 years of experience in social work, mental health advocacy, and community support to her work as an author, speaker, and advocate. She began her career with the County Board of Social Services before expanding her expertise across a variety of human services settings, including nursing homes, domestic violence programs, homelessness support services, and hospice care.
As a hospice bereavement coordinator, Lisa provided compassionate support to families navigating grief for up to eight months following the loss of a loved one. She also supervised Master of Social Work students during their field placements and received recognition for excellence in practicum education, highlighting her dedication to mentorship and the advancement of future social work professionals.
Following her personal experiences with mental health treatment and the lasting cognitive challenges she associates with more than 100 electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) treatments, Lisa transformed her journey into a platform for education and advocacy. She is the author of Shocked: Breaking the Stigma of Mental Illness and the Silence of Shock Therapy, a memoir that blends professional knowledge with lived experience to encourage greater transparency, ethical practices, and informed consent in psychiatric care.
Through her writing, speaking engagements, guided journals such as Hope Notes, and personalized group mini retreats focused on building self esteem, resilience, and community, Lisa provides meaningful resources and opportunities for education, healing, and open dialogue. Her advocacy work has been featured through podcasts, documentary appearances, news interviews, and mental health publications, allowing her to reach individuals, families, healthcare professionals, and organizations worldwide.
A graduate of Marywood University with a Master of Social Work, Lisa remains committed to amplifying patient voices, reducing stigma, and advancing compassionate, patient centered approaches to mental health care.
