Her Interview
Ten minutes with Lisa
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my faith in God, having good training, and compassion for all people. My dad always told me to get a job where you help people. I don't keep track of numbers because I want to stay humble and give credit to God.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One of my most important mentors was the late Elizabeth Coker of Hispanic American Mission. Her guidance helped me begin my career in immigration work and shaped my compassionate, community-centered approach. Decades later, I continue to carry her lessons and influence with me.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Know what you're doing. Go to the school, get the information. You can't just guess in this line of work because then you get someone deported or the case denied.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The challenges right now are with the current regime which is very anti-immigrant and they're not following due process of law. It's heartbreaking and frustrating because of the injustice that's currently going on.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Treating everybody the same. I'm tired of the hate in this world. It's really important to me that all people matter. People might not remember who you are, but they'll always remember how you made them feel. I never want to make anybody feel like they're not important or they don't matter.
