Her Story
About Lisa
I came to America from Belize, Central America in 2016, bringing managerial experience from the retail industry back home. When I arrived, I hadn't graduated from high school, but I completed my high school diploma through Next Step Learning, a nonprofit organization in Oakland. That achievement opened the door to my healthcare career, which was something I always wanted to do because I feel that the work I'm doing means something and provides service to the people who need it. I started as a temporary administrative assistant with the county in December 2018, became permanent in August 2019, and worked my way through the ranks from clerk to senior clerk, and now clerk specialist. I began in a clinical setting working in the clinics, but my role has evolved to be more administrative. Now I work closely with the leadership department in HR and hiring, attend leadership meetings to stay updated with our program and direction, do research, and assist with whatever leadership needs. I'm in more of a leadership role at this point, and I'm currently working my way to a supervisor position when available. What I love most is my leadership role - providing guidance, supervising staff, motivating them to be the best that they can be, training and guiding staff, and providing them with what they need. I continuously try to get different skills and certifications even if they don't directly apply to my current role, because I feel the more skills I put under my belt, the better it would be if I want to advance my career or even change fields.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The first thing you need to do is get your feet wet, and it doesn't matter which department. Get your foot in the door, especially since the field I work in is with the county. Get your feet wet, and it doesn't matter where you start off, because if you have a goal, if you have an aim, it doesn't matter where you start from. I can look back and say, you know, as a temp, I wouldn't have expected that in a couple years I would be here now, but I know that the work I put in, I know that where I started, I would have made it somewhere very far, because I am very determined and I will push myself, because I know what my potentials are. So it doesn't matter where you start off, is it small or not. If you have a goal, that's all you need.
