Her Story

About Lisa

Lisa Johnson is the Founder and Executive Director of Mentors & Meals, an intergenerational nonprofit organization. After a 25-year career in pharmaceutical sales and marketing, she retired early in 2011 to establish the organization in response to a critical need for structured after-school support for middle school students in her community. The program was designed to improve academic achievement by providing tutoring, mentoring, and access to consistent nutritional support through hot meals, while fostering meaningful connections between students and high school, college, and adult volunteers.

Under her leadership, Mentors & Meals has developed into a comprehensive, outcomes-driven program that integrates academic support with mentorship and community engagement. The organization tracks student progress and volunteer participation to ensure accountability and measure impact, strengthening its ability to support student success over time. This structured model has positioned the program as a trusted community resource that promotes educational growth, leadership development, and civic engagement.

Lisa’s work has earned recognition at the local, regional, and national levels for its innovation and impact. Mentors & Meals has received honors including United Way of the Bluegrass RSVP/Trailblazer “Volunteer Station of the Year,” the Governor’s First Lady’s Award for Volunteerism and Service through the Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service, and the Legacy Award from the Bluegrass Alliance for Women. The program has also been nationally nominated by the Council on National Community Service for its intergenerational mentoring approach. In addition to her nonprofit leadership, Lisa serves as a Versailles City Council Member and holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Kentucky’s Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, with a focus in education policy and nonprofit management.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Lisa

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to passion, purpose, and a commitment to service. While working with middle school students was not initially my preferred focus, it has become one of the most meaningful and formative experiences of my career. I have gained a deeper understanding of their challenges and potential, and I am continually motivated by a strong sense of responsibility to support young people who often do not have control over their circumstances. This perspective has strengthened my dedication to creating opportunities that help them succeed academically and personally.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received came from my father, who taught me that education is a great equalizer. This principle has stayed with me throughout my career and continues to guide my work and leadership approach. I actively share this message with students at all levels, encouraging them to view education as a powerful tool for opportunity, growth, and long-term success regardless of their circumstances.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this field is to lead with passion and a clear sense of purpose. Success in this work requires a genuine commitment to the mission, as that passion is what sustains you through challenges and keeps you focused on making a meaningful impact. Equally important is prioritizing balance maintaining a healthy work-life integration to prevent burnout and preserve long-term energy, focus, and enthusiasm. Embracing flexibility where possible allows you to stay grounded, resilient, and fully engaged in both your professional and personal life.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in the nonprofit sector today is financial sustainability. Securing funding through grants is often highly competitive and labor-intensive, which can divert valuable time and resources away from the core mission of the organization. At the same time, maintaining a strong and engaged donor base while continuing to deliver high-quality programs creates an ongoing balancing act. Despite these challenges, this environment also presents opportunities to innovate in fundraising strategies, strengthen community partnerships, and develop more sustainable models of support that ensure long-term impact.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity is the most important value guiding my work and personal life. I believe in being truthful and transparent in all aspects of my responsibilities, including the data and outcomes we share with donors, as well as the impact we report for the students we serve. Upholding integrity also means fostering a culture where every individual within the organization operates with honesty, accountability, and consistency in their actions. This commitment ensures trust is maintained with stakeholders and strengthens the overall credibility and effectiveness of the organization.
