Her Story

About Lisa

Lisa Lewis, MS, BSN, RN, is an accomplished nursing leader and School Nurse Consultant with Douglas County School District, bringing 29 years of progressive experience in pediatric nursing, clinical research, nursing education, healthcare leadership, and student wellness. Throughout her career, she has built a reputation for compassionate, evidence-based care and thoughtful leadership, with a particular commitment to supporting children, adolescents, and families. Her professional philosophy centers on caring for the whole person and recognizing the important connection between physical health, emotional well-being, mental health, and academic success.

Before joining Douglas County School District in 2021, Lisa spent 18 years with Children’s Hospital Colorado, where she held increasingly responsible positions in clinical research, nursing education, management, and program leadership. As a Clinical Program Manager for the Clinical Translational Research Center, she provided leadership for pediatric and perinatal clinical research nursing teams and was responsible for the coordination of more than 150 research protocols involving diverse patient populations and diagnoses. Her extensive clinical and leadership background has given her a strong foundation in program management, staff development, interdisciplinary collaboration, quality improvement, and the delivery of complex healthcare services. Today, as a School Nurse Consultant, she applies that expertise to a school setting serving approximately 1,800 students, partnering with teachers, administrators, families, and healthcare professionals to promote comprehensive student health and wellness.

Lisa holds a Master of Science in Management and Leadership from Western Governors University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Northern Colorado. She is a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator and has continued to expand her knowledge in integrative and holistic health, reflecting her commitment to innovative approaches to wellness. Her professional accomplishments include being nominated for a Nightingale Award for her contributions to a complex clinical research study. Lisa is actively involved with the National Association of School Nurses, Colorado Association of School Nurses, and American Holistic Nurses Association. Outside of her primary role, she volunteers with youth-focused initiatives that promote social-emotional learning and bullying prevention, mentors fellow nurses, and advocates for healthier school communities. Looking ahead, she hopes to establish a wellness coaching practice that integrates her extensive nursing experience, leadership expertise, and passion for holistic health into a broader approach to empowering individuals to achieve lasting well-being.

Ten minutes with Lisa

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the mentorship, guidance, and encouragement I have received throughout my career, particularly from a strong female leader at Children’s Hospital Colorado who helped me develop my leadership skills and approach challenges with confidence and purpose. I believe strongly in paying that support forward by mentoring and empowering other nurses, including colleagues transitioning into new areas of practice, and sharing the knowledge I have gained through my own experiences. My commitment to continuous learning has also been instrumental in my growth, from earning certifications in research and clinical nursing to completing my master’s degree in management and leadership and pursuing additional education in integrative health and holistic nursing. I also value opportunities to serve beyond my professional responsibilities, including leading social-emotional learning and bullying prevention programs for middle school students. These experiences have reinforced my belief that success is built through strong mentorship, lifelong learning, meaningful service, and a willingness to help others grow.

02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are compassion, service, integrity, collaboration, and continuous growth. Nursing has always felt like a natural calling because I have a genuine desire to care for others, advocate for their well-being, and make a meaningful difference in their lives. My commitment to pediatric and adolescent care has reinforced the importance of treating every individual with dignity, empathy, and respect. One of the professional accomplishments I value most was being nominated for a Nightingale Award for my work on a complex research study that required multidisciplinary collaboration and innovative approaches to care. That experience strengthened my belief in the power of teamwork and shared expertise. I also value giving back to my profession and community through my involvement with the American Holistic Nurses Association, National Association of School Nurses, and Colorado Association of School Nurses, as well as my work with Happy Crew to help destigmatize mental health and promote social-emotional well-being among middle and high school students.
