About Lisa

Lisa Montgomery has over three decades of experience in PR, marketing, and editorial work within the systems integration industry, beginning in 1992. After graduating from college, she started at a small newspaper handling obituaries and school board meetings before answering an ad for a magazine editor position despite having no prior technology background. She quickly learned the field by interviewing experts and has since worked across pure journalism, PR, and custom advertorial content, all centered on home technology topics such as lighting, security, and heating and cooling systems. She maintains a structured work-from-home schedule and values integrity and objectivity in her reporting, which extends to her personal approach. Her career has been shaped by involvement in industry organizations, including moderating panels and conducting on-camera interviews.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I do have to go back way back in the time machine, and I don't know if it was advice, but it very much painted my path. I was gonna go into some sort of medical field, and I took just your basic English class. And my professor, and I still remember his name, told me I was a really good writer, and I should join the school newspaper. And that kind of painted that pointed me in the direction that I went from then on. So I don't know if that was advice, that was somebody telling me that I was actually good at something, and, you know, hearing that as a college student really affected me, and so that pushed me to go into journalism. Now, as far as other advice, and this is kind of silly, but it's I keep it in the back of my mind all the time, and I people have told me to slow down. And because and read through things completely. I tend to be in a hurry. And I will skim over things, and I've learned that that can bite you in the butt. So, that was some advice I received. And also, we're not rocket scientists here. We are reporting on technology, we're not saving lives. So, that's the other thing, like, as important as you feel you are, there's a lot more around you that's way more important, and just, you know, do the best you can.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Phone up on AI. It's changed the way we do journalism. Completely. There are different ways that you write now to get that, she picked up, what is it called? AI citation. You know, where your work gets cited in an AI engine. You have to change the way you write and the way that whole format changes. That would be my advice right now. The way I learned journalism. is way different than the way I do journalism now. And so AI has changed that.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges would be that this is an industry that is that evolves quickly. So, what's new today is not going to be new a week from today, sometimes, so you really have to keep abreast of what's happening. To stay on top of the trends. and the new technologies that are coming out, you know, for example, AI, you know, all of a sudden, this AI has taken over everything, and you almost have to become an expert overnight in some of these, new technologies. So that's the biggest challenge for me, and I cover so many different categories. lighting, security, Heating and cooling, anything that's technology in your house, so it's a lot. So the sheer volume and just keeping on trend.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say integrity? You know, as a journalist, you're always taught to Maintain integrity in the work that you do. remaining objectives, and I think that carries through to my personal life, too. I'm very much, you know, I try not to pass judgment, and just, you know, focus on the facts as I have them. And so that, that carries through to my personal life, too.
