Her Story
About Lisa
I have been working in the education field for 32 years, and I'm currently serving as a high school guidance counselor, a position I've held for the past 3 years. Before this, I worked as a college instructor. In my current role, I'm responsible for creating high school schedules, supporting the emotional well-being of students, and meeting their individual needs. We also run programs like Aaron's Law, but my main focus is on scheduling and the emotional support of our students. What inspired me to get into this field was just a natural drive to be helpful. School counseling seemed like a good fit for what I was looking to do - to be a mother, have a career, and feel like I've fulfilled that desire to be helpful somewhere in the world. One of my most notable achievements was being nominated for Instructor of the Year in 2008, which was a nice recognition even though I didn't win.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Lisa
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say being able to do what you enjoy and what motivates you, and feeling rewarded, really keeps you going. Choosing the right profession that fits you was one thing, and obviously hard work to get there. When you can do work that you enjoy and it motivates you and makes you feel rewarded, that keeps you going in your career.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I know people are kind of scared of education. It's a stressful job, no doubt, but it's very rewarding as well. Despite the challenges and stress that come with working in education, the rewards make it worthwhile.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Since I'm dealing with students in high school, social media and students being on their phones is a huge challenge. It's a nightmare - everybody had phones, everybody was responding emotionally, filming, stirring up stuff, and online bullying behind the scenes. We finally made them put them away, but I'll be ready for the ban. Another huge challenge is helping teach students to regulate their emotions.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Honesty is big for me. Kindness of others is important. Having a good work ethic and considering others are values I hold dear. Just general good overall qualities matter to me in both my work and personal life.
