Her Story

About Lisett

I am the Director of Accounting at Aqua Management LLC, a real estate management company where I have been working for nearly 7 years. In this role, I take care of all the accounting transactions, bank account reconciliations, payroll, and prepare all the financial statements to be ready for filing taxes at the end of the year. I make sure everything is right and consistent and based on the accounting rules. My journey to this position has been challenging but rewarding. I came from El Salvador in 2007 with no English, and my big dream was to work in my career in accounting here in the United States. I worked very hard first with my English, spending years taking English classes, because I knew that was the foundation I needed. During that process, I cried a lot because I was looking for opportunities and building experience little by little. I started working as a bookkeeper in New York in 2011, then moved to Texas in 2012. I went to the University of Texas at Arlington to get my accounting specialist certificate, and also earned certificates in payroll and bookkeeping. I even worked part-time at H&R Block during tax season just to get experience in taxes. I believe my biggest achievement is working as an accountant in this country after coming here with no English. I did my part, and I believe God opened the doors for me.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to myself and my husband as my mentors, and to God opening doors for me. When I came from El Salvador in 2007 with no English, my big dream was to work in my career in accounting. I worked very hard, first with my English, spending years taking English classes. During that process, I cried a lot because I was looking for opportunities and building experience little by little. I did my part, working hard and never giving up on my dream, and I believe God opened the doors for me. My husband supported me throughout this journey, and together with my own determination and faith, I was able to achieve my goal of becoming a Director of Accounting.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I say to everybody, keep going. Keep going, you know, have your dream in front of you, and keep going. You're going to have difficult moments in your life, but you have to keep going, because that is the only way that you can get your dreams done. If you want to be in accounting, you know, go to college, or not just really college, but I believe in this country, we have a lot of opportunities. For example, try to get some certificate before, like an accounting specialist certificate, and that will be an open door for you. If you want to go more far, you know, after that, you can go to college for CPA or whatever you want.
