Her Story
About Liz
Liz Abess is a coach based in Folsom, California. With more than 30 years of experience in her field, she began her journey after her mother overdosed on heroin 30 years ago. Initially working on the periphery, she started realizing her purpose about 5 years later by writing a book, serving on nonprofit boards with families in addiction programs, and earning her degrees. In the last 5 years, Abess developed a platform for speaking, workshops, and newsletters while working on her second book. She has shifted her focus to coaching professionals and families to stop over-giving in relationships involving addiction, preferring the term over-giving to codependency as it better describes enabling behaviors that keep loved ones stuck. Abess also co-facilitates meetings every other week for parents of addicted loved ones. She holds a BS in Marketing and a Master's in Creative Writing Nonfiction and is currently pursuing certification as a Co-Active Practitioner under the International Coaching Federation. Her work is driven by a desire to help others make discoveries and change behaviors using her 40 years of personal experiences with addiction and mental health issues. The greatest career advice she has received is that there is no Plan B, which keeps her motivated.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Liz
01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
There is no Plan B. That keeps me motivated.
02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Denial is the biggest challenge. Most people have a hard time recognizing their role in enabling because it looks like love and feels good to support them, but it removes consequences. Addiction doesn't survive without an enabler.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Helping others make discoveries and change to free them from behaviors that might be keeping their loved one stuck. Using 40 years of hard personal experiences with addiction and mental health issues to help other people.
