Her Story

About Lola

My journey into healthcare was inspired by a deep desire to help people and give back to my community. When I lived in Nigeria for a few years, I witnessed the incredible impact our pastors were making in the community, and it really inspired me to want to make a difference through nurturing and caring for others. I've been in nursing for 9 years now, and I'm very drawn to women's services. I currently work postpartum with moms and babies, doing a lot of education with patients and families, preparing them to take care of their newborn babies. What I find most rewarding is being there for that special moment when families have their babies, being able to teach them, help with breastfeeding, and support and empower them. They don't forget you, you know. About a year and a half ago, I started Utopia Event and Rentals with just a prayer and faith, not really knowing what I was doing, and I've been able to build it up from the ground up. I mainly do photo booths for weddings, birthdays, and other events, and I love capturing moments and creating memories for people. In my first year, I had over 60 events, including working with the City of Dallas, all while still working 12-hour nursing shifts and being a mom to my young son. There are days I finish a 12-hour shift and then spend the next 2-3 hours at an event. Running a business has taught me a lot about myself and my self-awareness. As a business owner, you're doing everything - marketing, posting on Instagram and TikTok, responding to clients, and thinking of new ways to create something different in the industry.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice would be to honestly take your time and really take what you're doing seriously. Don't just go into it because you want money - really care about the job and what you're going to be doing for others. I've noticed there's some nurses I've worked with who don't really care about the patient, so I would say if you're just going into it, really have the passion. Be passionate about what you're doing. One thing I've learned is how you do one thing is how you'll do everything, so really take your time, give it all that you've got, and take it seriously. Put yourself in those areas, you know, maybe even getting a job in a hospital or volunteering to get your hands wet and kind of learn more about the environment. Ask questions and try to just put yourself out there. You don't know what opportunities are available, so it's good to get yourself into those environments if you can, as a tech, an assistant, or a secretary - things like that.
