Her Story

About Lola

Dr. Lola Russell is a distinguished public health communicator, pastor, and community leader with more than two decades of experience in strategic communications, public affairs, media relations, and ministry leadership. She currently serves as a Senior Health Communications professional with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where she develops communication strategies, translates complex health information for public audiences, and supports effective messaging during critical public health initiatives. Her expertise includes strategic communications, crisis communication, media relations, public speaking, community engagement, and creating impactful narratives that connect with diverse populations.

Before and alongside her work in public health, Dr. Russell built a strong foundation in communications and political engagement, supporting women leaders and advancing community-focused initiatives. She served as a field director for a gubernatorial campaign, becoming the first Black woman to hold that position in the race. Joining the campaign when the candidate was polling at 9%, she helped develop and execute outreach strategies, including coordinating travel schedules, organizing sister-to-sister events that brought women to the U.S. Capitol to engage with members of Congress, facilitating district events with elected officials, and leading successful town halls with cabinet leaders. Her ability to build relationships, organize communities, and communicate effectively has been a defining strength throughout her career.

Dr. Russell also serves as Pastor of Pleasant Hill Victory (PHV) within the African Methodist Episcopal Church, continuing a family legacy deeply rooted in AME clergy. She received her calling to ministry following the passing of her uncle and has dedicated herself to serving others through faith, leadership, and community engagement. She is recognized for her work in Womanist Theology, adult learning, pastoral ministry, and empowering women in ministry leadership, including her role as Women in Ministry elected coordinator for Atlanta North Georgia. Dr. Russell earned her Ph.D. in Lifelong Learning, Administration, and Policy with a focus on Women’s Studies from University of Georgia and her Master of Divinity in Womanist Theology from Interdenominational Theological Center. Outside of her professional responsibilities, she enjoys reading, studying sermons, and continuously expanding her knowledge to strengthen her ministry and service to others.

Ten minutes with Lola

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my passion for what I do, which has consistently motivated me to pursue excellence, embrace challenges, and continue growing both personally and professionally. My dedication, commitment to continuous learning, and genuine enthusiasm for my work have allowed me to build meaningful relationships, overcome obstacles, and achieve lasting success in my career.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to remain true to who God created me to be and never allow others to define my destiny or limit my potential. As a woman in ministry, I have learned the importance of embracing my full identity as a person while honoring my calling. The church provides opportunities, but it is up to me to use those opportunities with purpose, wisdom, and dedication to create meaningful impact. This guidance has encouraged me to pursue my path authentically, while balancing my personal life, faith, and professional responsibilities.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to succeed. Building relationships with experienced women who can provide guidance, mentorship, and support is invaluable. I encourage them to show up fully, remain present, ask questions, and never be afraid to use their voices. Most importantly, they should embrace their authentic selves and create a strong community around them, knowing that collaboration, confidence, and connection are essential to long-term success.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is facing rejection and hearing the word “no.” However, I have learned that setbacks are often opportunities for growth, resilience, and redirection. Staying committed to my purpose, remaining persistent, and continuing to pursue opportunities with faith and determination have allowed me to turn challenges into valuable experiences and continue moving forward.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The value that is most important to me in both my work and personal life is authenticity. I believe in showing up as my true self, leading with honesty, and remaining grounded in my values and purpose. Authenticity allows me to build genuine relationships, serve others with integrity, and create meaningful connections while staying true to who I am.
