Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the personal experiences that shaped my passion for senior and hospice care. My father was diabetic and underwent a double amputation, and my mother faced both a heart condition and dementia. My family cared for them together until they passed with the support of hospice care. That experience deeply moved me and inspired me to dedicate my career to helping other families navigate similar journeys with compassion and dignity.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received came from my mentor, Cindy Jones, who first inspired me to pursue a role in senior healthcare. She taught me the importance of compassion, integrity, and staying committed to making a difference in people’s lives. I also draw strength and guidance from my daughter, Chanelle Smith, an executive at MAC Cosmetics. She reminds me that it’s never too late to achieve your goals—having her first child at 39—and she’s always someone I can turn to for honest advice and perspective.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to never let age or timing hold you back from pursuing your education or career goals. Learning is a lifelong journey, and it’s never too late to start or continue growing. Most importantly, enjoy the process—don’t be afraid to take time for yourself and find balance. Hard work is important, but so is taking care of your well-being along the way.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are compassion, connection, and integrity. In my career, I take great pride in attending senior health fairs, answering questions, and providing reassurance to those who need it most—it’s deeply fulfilling to make a positive impact and build trust through genuine care. Personally, my family keeps me grounded and grateful: my husband, who lovingly cooks dinner each evening, our three grandsons and new granddaughter, and our two dogs who join me on walks around the neighborhood. I also value community and joy—whether it’s socializing with neighbors or having time with friends, I believe in embracing life’s simple moments and nurturing meaningful relationships.
