Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a lifelong passion for hospitality and the determination I learned from my family and mentors. Growing up in Florida, I immersed myself in the hospitality world starting in retail and did part-time 'Cater-waitering" duties at the Crystal Lake Country Club in Deerfield Beach before building and running my own business selling roses in nightclubs. This little fluke of something to do, I grew into a thriving seven-to-eight-year venture before selling it in 2020 when my husband graduated. I then moved into the travel industry with rental cars and then settling into hotels. One of the proudest moments in my career was recently, when I had the opportunity to host a client who rented out my entire venue for a large-scale event in August of 2025, an accomplishment that reminds me that an open mind can lead to great success. My father instilled in me the stubborn strength to push through challenges with directiveness & purpose, while my mother has always been an incredible inspiration, showing me the power of perseverance and grace. Along the way, I’ve also been guided by mentors such as Marvin from IHG, whose insight and support have helped shape my journey and sharpen my vision in the hospitality industry.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

When I first started out in management I struggled with the question of "what type of manager do I want to be and how can I get them to connect with me"? A colleague gave me a book called "discipline without punishment" I was captivated. I took over reading the book and never put down the scriptures that paved the way to the leader that I am today. Thank you Candice. Read the book if you want to know what that advise is - It's priceless.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the hospitality, or any industry, is simple: never take yourself out of the equation. Don’t disqualify yourself before you’ve even tried. Go for the opportunity, and if there’s a limitation, let someone else be the one to tell you no. You’ll often surprise yourself with what you’re capable of, and every experience, whether it works out or not, will move you forward.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The hospitality industry in Charleston, South Carolina, is currently facing several significant challenges the top five that I see daily are:
1. Labor Shortages - Many young workers are leaving hospitality roles due to long hours, physically demanding shifts, and better pay/benefits elsewhere. Taking roles that fit the "gig Movement" Flex pay, shorter hours, hybrid offices, and sometimes not the same employer.
2. Rising operational costs - Inflation is driving up costs of food, supplies, energy, and labor. All things that pay the cost of running and operating a hotel. Resulting in slim profit margins + rising costs of ingredients, wages, insurance, etc.
3. Development & Market Saturation - There’s a lot of hotel development underway: new rooms, more competition. That can be good overall for the area, but it also means existing hotels must work harder to differentiate, maintain service, and hold market share. One hotel that is new to our area, I believe is going to set-the-tone for hotel experiences in the future.
4. Seasonality & Demand Fluctuations - Charleston has strong tourism during certain times (spring, summer, special events), but during off-peak seasons occupancy drops, which hurts consistent revenue. Some smaller markets and hoteliers are still recovering from 2020 numbers.
5. Tariffs & Visa Restrictions - Restrictions on Corporate and Government travel year-over-year directly impacts the hospitality industry in Charleston, SC especially since the city thrives on both domestic and international tourism.

These present challenges, they also open doors for strategic growth. By diversifying into regional drive markets, investing in local workforce development, and positioning Charleston as a premier domestic event destination, the industry can capture new demand. Most importantly, elevating guest experiences with personalized touches and value-driven packages will not only strengthen loyalty but also ensure long-term resilience as "Southern Hospitality" at it's Best!

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life center around creating meaningful experiences and embracing adventure. I love being outdoors and traveling overseas, as both keep me inspired, grounded, and open to new perspectives. I’m a true foodie, always seeking out flavors and cultures that tell a story, which mirrors the curiosity and passion I bring into my career in hospitality.

Never stop dating your spouse. The idea behind this is that even after the I Do's, you should continue to invest in the relationship—make time, show appreciation, and keep the prospect alive—just like when you were "Cold Calling".
