Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the incredible mentorship I received from Jonathan, who brought me into the industry at AJ Barth and supported me throughout my career. He was someone I could always call for support and advice, even during the 5 or 6 years when we didn't work together. In a full-circle moment, after his shop was closing down, he called me asking if I could help him get an interview at my company, Color Dynamics, and I ended up helping him get a job at the end of his career. He was massive through my career, and having that kind of mentor who believed in me made all the difference. My grandmother also played a key role in getting me started by connecting me with that first opportunity right out of college.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say stick with it. Don't be discouraged if Rome wasn't built in a day. I feel that pressure every time I've had to move to a new shop - sometimes you can bring a chunk of your business over, but a lot of times you kind of got to start over, and it's a slow build. But once it starts rolling, and residual work comes in, and you start getting referrals, things just feel good and easy again. There are always periods of self-doubt, and it's easy to feel like you're failing because you're the people bringing the money into the business and paying everyone's paychecks by the jobs that you bring in. When you're having a bad couple of months, it's easy to feel like you're not good at this, but just stick with it and know that you're the one that's being hardest on yourself. Your team believes in you - you gotta believe in you.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in commercial printing right now is that some people say print is dying, though I like to think that it's reinventing itself. I've worked at 5 print shops in my career, and 3 of them have gone under, which shows the instability in the industry. There are always pains when you've got to move your book of business somewhere else, somewhere new. But I see the opportunity in helping the industry stay fresh and innovative - a lot of the industry is older, so I've started helping out with marketing to bring new ideas. The challenge for me is how to elevate print pieces that are often overlooked, to make them stand out in ways that capture attention, whether it's direct mail or product packaging.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important value to me is being there for people the way my best boss was there for me. At my last print shop, I had the best boss I think I've ever had - he was a VP of sales who really knew how to motivate people and lead. When I had my first child while working at that shop, he was just so good to me and made me feel like I was taken care of, and I could take the time off that I needed to spend with my new son. I would love to be that for a team one day, which is why my next role, I would like to try and move into a sales leader position. I want to create that same supportive environment for others that was created for me.
