About Lori
My journey into insurance began 21 years ago when someone enrolled my mother in the wrong Medicare Advantage plan. That experience ignited my passion to help every person like my mom, every senior who needs help navigating the dynamics and nuances of Medicare. Before insurance, I spent seven and a half years in corrections at a juvenile facility where I worked as a teacher and Director of Training and Development. When that institution went out of business, I migrated into corporate America, working as Director of Training and Recruitment at the Commercial Appeal, one of the largest publications in the world, where I oversaw the sales department. I then moved to ITT Tech Institute in the same role. Most of my career has been in the recruitment and training space, which ultimately led me to purchase Sevier Insurance Training, one of the oldest insurance schools in the Mid-South covering Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi. What makes this story remarkable is that I attended this very school 20 years before buying it. During my class, I found it a bit boring and told the owner, Tom Sevier, 'I'm gonna own the school one day.' Twenty years later, when he was retiring, he called me and said he remembered my words. Even though 10 other people wanted to purchase the school, he believed I would carry on his legacy and sold it to me. I've now owned the school for 5 years, and I walk into it every day with pride, knowing this man laid the groundwork for me as an African-American female. We're cultivating relationships and building the foundation for success, bringing more insurance agencies into the fold. The school prepares students for state licensing exams with a 98% pass rate and offers continuing education credits. I also own an insurance agency with over 300 agents. My day-to-day involves creating systems, developing strategies, managing agents and leads, and putting on member retention events where we bring entertainment to our office. Our biggest platform is educating seniors on Medicare benefits at no cost to them, covering Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Supplements, dental, vision, hearing, annuities, and hospital indemnities. I also host a radio show on the Bev Johnson Show on iHeart Radio, where people can download the app and listen from all over the world. I serve clients from California all the way to Mississippi.

Ten minutes with Lori
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a defining moment of struggle that became my driving force. I was married, pregnant, and sitting at home with my mother when my twin sister came over talking about these good catfish nuggets. When she said they were just $20, I realized I didn't even have $20, and that feeling in my whole soul was one of the lowest points of my life. That's when I started fighting, when I decided you gotta thrive, you gotta survive. I got out and started doing grant writing, connecting, and collaborating. With my master's degree, I became an adjunct professor teaching criminal justice, algebra, English, and test-taking strategy courses at LeMoyne College, Remington College, and Arkansas Baptist College. Now I keep several $20 bills in my wallet, and I inscribe on them 'may you never need this $20.' During our open enrollment period ramp-up, I pass these $20 bills out to my agents as a reminder. I'm traumatized by that $20, but it fuels everything I do. I also live a purpose-driven life, and I believe in starting each day in the wee hours of the morning when you allow God to download that message to you. Even though every day comes with different challenges, the beauty is in having that day where you're walking, talking, thriving, and dreaming.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Find out what your purpose is, and how do you find that out? It's in the wee hours of the morning when you allow God to download that message to you to start your day off. Every day comes with different challenges, but the beauty in it is having that day where you're walking and talking and thriving and dreaming. So just never stop dreaming, and try to find your purpose early on so that you entertain those things that are going to get you to the next step in your purpose, in your journey. You need to surround yourself with mentors and individuals who can help fuel that fire. One thing I would really share is that I'm a big mouth and I just like bringing people into my dreams and my thoughts, and I think that has really hurt sometimes because God didn't give them the passion, the vision, that I have. Maybe they can't see it, and you'll have people that say it's too big or you're thinking wrong, but he didn't give it to them. You have to understand that he's given it to you. It's for you to write the vision, make a plan, and walk it out.
