Her Story

About louella

I was born and raised in the Philippines and moved to the United States when I was young. When I first arrived, I wanted to go to nursing school but couldn't afford it. I also struggled with the idea of working in healthcare because I care too much about people and go above and beyond every time. When I moved from Tampa to Gainesville, I started working at Volcanic Sushi and I loved it. I loved the fact that I could give people positive experiences and always go the extra mile. I've been with Volcanic Sushi for almost 10 years now, and I've grown tremendously in the company. As a general manager, I don't just manage - I actually serve, make the sushi, cook in the kitchen, bus tables, and wash dishes. I've created a special menu where every item has a story that connects the restaurant to our clients. I focus on ensuring there is balance between quality, cleanliness, and service, because if you don't have the connection to your customers, the business won't thrive. I've seen my customers dating, getting engaged, having their first kids, and getting married. They trust me so much that I have about 5 keys to their houses around the area. I was even awarded as the best server for the whole city of Gainesville in a hometown favorite recognition. Now I'm back in school at Santa Fe College pursuing nursing, because I've always wanted to live with purpose and do something that could leave an impact to help others.

01What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I've always wanted to live with purpose. If I'm doing something, I want it to be something I love and something that could leave an impact to help others. I guess that's my love language - I'm kind to other people, probably because I know how it feels like to have nothing, which is why I'm from the Philippines and I've been through it. I believe that everything I have in my life right now is a blessing, and I will never forget to give back. In my little ways, I do it. It doesn't take a lot to help, but I definitely look out for everyone. It takes a village. You can have all the quality and a clean restaurant, but if you don't have the service and the connection to your customers, I don't think that business will thrive.
