Her Story
About Lucia
What I love most about my role is definitely the relationships and getting to meet people. The fact that I get to continuously learn and grow is incredibly rewarding. One thing I've brought with me from my journalism background is that even if you're not the subject expert, you can still learn about it. I'm not the doer - I'm not going to be designing the plan sets or signing them - but I can learn about what services we provide and whether we deliver a quality product. The best part of all of it is linking people together. I love connecting people, whether it's the consultant selection team members and introducing them to my engineers, or just building those relationships and being that link. I know that local elected officials may not be subject matter experts either, so being the liaison is what I love the most. I'm always eager to learn more about how public infrastructure works - we experience it every day, but we don't think about it, and oftentimes we don't see it. I just love the relationship aspect of it and connecting the right people with each other.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I always say to absolutely trust your instinct, because at the end of the day, no one knows what's right for you but you. Anytime you're confronted with self-doubt, look inward and go back to that instinct, because at the end of the day, believing in yourself is going to be your most powerful tool no matter where you go. Learning to trust yourself and having that belief will help align your mind, your heart, and your identity. I think as women, it's very important to believe in ourselves, because we're always going to be confronted with people who don't. Instead of focusing or searching for that external validation, learning to validate yourself, I think, is the most important thing we can do in our careers.
