Her Story

About Lucinda

I started my career in 2001 with a background in mechanical engineering. I was working in equipment liability at my previous company when someone from the regulatory compliance department came over and told me they thought I would be great for their department. They saw certain ideal traits in me that would work well in compliance and regulatory environments. That's how I transitioned from engineering into the regulatory compliance path I'm on now. In my current role, I work with critical infrastructure protection, where my key responsibility is ensuring that our standards align with our current practices and regulatory requirements. On a day-to-day basis, I handle any issues that arise and make sure we're following regulatory guidelines. I maintain evidence for auditing purposes and attend regulatory meetings to ensure we're staying aligned with the standards set by the regulatory environment. My most notable professional achievement so far has been developing a training program for our department and company. I identified a need because we didn't have a clear structure for training, so I developed the curriculum and created a platform where both new hires and employees who have been with the company for many years can access the training they need on various regulatory standards and requirements.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think it's more over my upbringing and my determination. I have children and a spouse, so you also have the determination of where do you want to be in life, right? You have goals and aspirations. But beginning, basically, I would say my upbringing established a path for me to even evaluate certain standards that I would like to achieve. My family and the foundation I was given helped me set the goals and work toward the professional standards I wanted to reach.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say first, it is a difficult industry. I started off in engineering, and it is a male-dominated field, so I definitely say to kind of deep dive into educating yourself as much as possible. Get in there and do not be shy of learning new things, and just be determined. Don't give up, because you're definitely going to have those adversities that are going to be thrown against you because you're a female. If this is something that you really want to achieve, you're really going to have to stand strong on what you believe in and be very outspoken. Don't feel as if you cannot speak up for what your ideas are at all times. Make sure that you're vocal with your ideas and press forward with it. Networking is definitely an advantage in this type of field when it's dominated by males. Just keep moving forward, you have your ideas, you have your thoughts, just keep moving forward with it.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The challenges are, again, because it is a dominated field, a male-dominated field, so that's a huge challenge. But there are definitely opportunities there, but you have to basically seek them. Make sure that you go in and network. Networking is definitely an advantage in this type of field when it's dominated by males. You have to be proactive about finding opportunities and building connections. Just keep moving forward with your ideas and your thoughts.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are competence, reliability, and integrity. Personally, I would say loyalty is also very important. These are the principles that guide both my professional work and my personal relationships.
