Her Story
About Lucy
I started as a land surveyor out in the field with crews, machete in one hand and GPS in the other, learning to fly drones to make detailed maps for builders including elevations, utilities, and right-of-way lines accurate to 2 centimeters. After advancing quickly due to my communication skills with the crew, I moved to a role flying power lines for a major Florida reinforcement project amid hurricane concerns, but missed the mapping work. About 4 years ago I joined my current company doing in-depth GIS work helping utilities maintain accurate maps and processes across about 7 utilities including gas, electric transmission and distribution, and water. I've earned 4 promotions in 4 years, moving from GIS SME analyst to business development associate, assistant project manager, and now Associate Principal, largely because I take initiative beyond my role and communicate well.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would give them the advice to trust their instinct and to take the opportunities that you see, like places where there's a gap. Just not be afraid of conversations and approaching people. And to always be kind also. Kindness has got me a long way.
