About Lucy

Lucy Coutinho serves as a counselor in the education field, where she provides social-emotional support and focuses on the holistic development of students. She has noted the challenges of hefty caseloads that limit one-on-one time with students and sees opportunities in addressing mental health and home challenges that affect academic performance. Coutinho received the 100 Women of Color award for her work in the community with women. Prior to her current role, she worked in television, starting as an intern producer at Channel 7 News in Boston and spending nearly a decade there before moving to other networks in Boston and Washington, D.C. She attributes her success to her passion for education and dedication to her students, and she also hosts a Women's Wellness Podcast that she launched in 2019 and is relaunching.

01What do you attribute your success to?

My passion for education and my dedication to my students. I do it for them.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Make sure it's something that you are very passionate about and it's something that is in your heart to do. It's a very intuitive kind of profession and it requires a lot of heart. Ensure that your heart is in the right place. Also make sure that you always find time for your personal self-care, set boundaries, and do not neglect yourself.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is not having enough one-on-one time with each student due to hefty caseloads. Opportunities include offering more social-emotional support and focusing on the holistic aspect of students, recognizing the impact of mental health and home challenges on academic performance.
