Her Story
About Lucy
Lucy Wang is a global data science leader, Statistics PhD, and mother of two daughters who has built her career at the intersection of technical rigor, artificial intelligence, and business transformation. Across global technology platforms including Uber, ByteDance, Kuaishou, and Bilibili, she has led data science through complex, high-scale environments, with experience spanning marketplace optimization, pricing strategy, AI-native analytics, experimentation systems, and executive decision frameworks.
Known for combining deep statistical thinking with sharp business judgment, Lucy turns ambiguity into measurable strategy and data into operating systems that help companies move faster and smarter. Her leadership experience includes building and leading data science and analytics teams, developing sophisticated approaches to product analytics and machine learning, and helping organizations use data more effectively to drive business decisions.
Lucy holds a Ph.D. in Statistics from Rice University, where her research focused on nonparametric regression methods for functional data. She has also completed executive education in Leadership and Strategy at Harvard Business School. Throughout her career, she has remained deeply engaged with artificial intelligence as both a leader and entrepreneur, continuing to stay hands-on with coding, training, and emerging technologies.
Beyond her technical accomplishments, Lucy brings a thoughtful and empathetic approach to leadership shaped in part by her experience as a mother of two daughters. As one of relatively few women in senior data science and executive roles, she is passionate about encouraging younger professionals, particularly women in technology, to approach their careers with independence and confidence.
Her story reflects global ambition with empathy, leading across cultures, industries, and life stages while staying grounded in the belief that influence is not simply about achievement, but about creating lasting value for products, people, and the next generation of women in tech.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Lucy
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my commitment, strong communication skills, and deep technical grounding in statistics. Together, these have allowed me to deliver high-impact work and build large, effective teams in fast-paced environments.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I ever received was to defend myself without being defensive. I first encountered this principle in a financial math class in college, and I've since applied it throughout my career to navigate stereotypes and challenging situations in the tech world while staying grounded.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I encourage young women entering this field to shift from a student mindset to a professional one. It's important to see yourself as an independent, capable professional rather than carrying over a transitional, student-like mentality into the workplace.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Women remain underrepresented in tech, particularly in data science and engineering, and I often find myself the only woman in executive meetings. Stereotypes still exist, such as being labeled "the female math PhD," but I've found that consistently delivering high-impact results is the most effective way to overcome them.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
My technical strength in statistics is central to how I operate professionally. As a female leader and mother of two daughters, I place great value on balancing high standards with empathy and compassion for my team. Motherhood has shaped my leadership approach, teaching me to create room for people to grow while still pushing for strong results.
