About Luz

Luz Dayana Blaquera is a chef-owner at El Huarache Loco and a second-generation professional in the restaurant and hospitality industry. With 21 years of experience in the family business, she began helping at a young age, supporting front-of-house operations and representing the family restaurant before developing her skills in the kitchen. Her passion for Mexican cuisine is deeply rooted in her family, as both of her parents are chefs, and she is committed to preserving Mexican traditions, recipes, and culture through her work. Alongside her professional responsibilities, Luz is pursuing her culinary education at City College of San Francisco, where she is currently in her third year and working toward graduating in May 2027. She is also expanding her culinary experience through an internship at a fine-dining Mexican restaurant in San Francisco, Californios. Her accomplishments include placing third in the 2024 Culinary Clash, receiving the 2025 Legacy Award from La Cocina alongside her mother, and being recognized by the City and County of San Francisco. She is particularly proud of independently producing her first event and participating in a cookbook tour with La Cocina. Luz credits her family, community, and mentors for helping shape her journey and leads with openness and inclusivity. She believes success in the culinary industry requires persistence, learning from mistakes, building safe and supportive communities, and appreciating the journey along the way. Beyond cooking, she enjoys fashion, sewing, dancing, taking walks, exploring San Francisco, and spending time with her family. Through her culinary career and continued education, Luz is building on her family's legacy while creating her own path in the industry.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Luz

01What do you attribute your success to?

My family, my mom, my dad, my community, mentors and my husband have been there to help me through it all. Without them I wouldn't be where I'm at. The talent, technique and work I put in is me but everything I've learned comes from them.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't forget to have fun, to smile and laugh a little through it all. Because sometimes we just want things to be perfect but that doesn't always happen. My chefs and mom remind me to be strong and have fun.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Keep going and don't give up, everything is possible. Have a community or group of people you feel safe with. Don't be so hard on yourself, make mistakes and learn from them. Have fun, enjoy the journey, take pictures and journal.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Biggest challenge is everything being so expensive in California, funding and affording to branch out. Biggest opportunity is connecting with other people because you never know where life is going to take you.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Keeping traditions alive, remembering what is true to you like recipes and culture as a Mexican family. Family is most important, spending time together and passing things down.
