Her Story

About Luz

Luz Cardona is a licensed marriage and family therapist associate practicing in New Haven, Connecticut. With seven years in case management, including her position as a transitional care manager at Yale New Haven Hospital, and two years providing psychotherapy, she transitioned into her clinical role after observing gaps in patient communication and support during hospital discharges. Cardona earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Albertus Magnus College in Connecticut and her master's degree in Family Science from Capella University. She values creating a safe space for patients and meeting clients where they are, drawing from her own experiences growing up in a dysfunctional family that inspired her path toward becoming a doctor and continuing her education. Cardona attributes feedback from her supervisor about staying kid-centered in coercive family dynamics as key career guidance, and she notes challenges in working with clients who have borderline personality disorder.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Luz

01What do you attribute your success to?

Being brought up in a very dysfunctional family, the little girl inside of me always knew she wanted to become a doctor. I didn't understand where that empath part of me was coming from but I do plan on continuing my education, possibly a doctor in the future.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Feedback that I seem like I've been doing psychotherapy for 11 years when it's only been 2. Supervisor said I am a great asset and it's hard to stay regulated when you have two unregulated parents, so stay kid-centered and focused on what is best for the child client.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Dealing with clients who have borderline personality disorder is a very big challenge, as some have yelled and screamed during sessions.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Creating a very safe space for my patients and really meeting the client where they're at.
